Sleep help

Does anyone have an infant who like mine cannot be calmed or helped to sleep with simply a pacifier and a rub on the tummy or back? I have to rock him almost completely asleep if I put him in his crib not asleep he will kick, grab his feet, and roll around. This will last up to ten minutes before he starts crying.

However, if I put him in his car seat he will eventually fall asleep!

Any advice? Much of what I read suggests tactics that just don't work for my five month old.

Re: Sleep help

  • Yah, a pat on the back or tummy does nothing except make my baby mad that I'm not picking her up.  I have to nurse her to sleep.  I have been implementing some ideas from No Cry Sleep Solution to diminish the suck to sleep association.  She has a lot of ideas to gently help baby learn to sleep.  If you google NCSS you can find most of the ideas that are in the book.

  • Months 4 to 6 were the hardest for me when it came to putting LO down to sleep.  I had to nurse and rock him to sleep every night.  Around 6 or 7 months he got much better at self soothing and I could turn on his little rainforest mobile thing and he would fall asleep on his own 80% of the time.

I think you'll find that he'll be ready to put himself to sleep on his own soon, but in the meantime maybe download some books on your ipod or phone so you can read in the dark while you're nursing and rocking (that's what saved my sanity lol)

  • Awesome, thanks! I stopped nursing him right before bed time and am only feeding him once at night between 1 - 3 but he still wakes up frequently and always needs to be rocked. I don't mind waking up for the feeding but the times before and after are brutal!
