Food Allergy

New and unsure

Hi all,

My LO is 4 months old.  We have been dealing with reflux issues since he was about a month old.  It took several visits to the pediatrician before we could get a referral to a gastric pedi.

After a very brief visit and no actual testing, they told me that my son has MPSI.  I have been on a whole-foods, dairy free, soy free diet for 4 weeks.  I work fullt ime and during the week, he takes 1 bottle of formula a day to cover the gap when I am not home.  They put my son on Allimentum, and he HATED it.  Screaming, gagging, choking, hysterical, bottle refusal, taking only 1 oz after an hour.  So we switched to elecare and-same thing.

He was on zantac, and was sleeping 4 hours for the first sleep of the night, and then would wake up every hour after that, refluxing.  They swiched him to prilosec and immediately he dropped down to 2.5 hours, and waking up every 45 minutes to an hour.

I brought up the issue with the gastric pedi, and he told me that he doesnt believe my son is refluxing and that he has "a behavioral problem" and that we are picking him up too often and that we should "leave him in the crib to cry himself to sleep because at his age, he should be sleeping through the night."  Umm...WTF? No.  I explained that he is waking himself up arching and grunting and gagging and he said that is part of the normal sleep-wake cycle for babies.  I am having a hard time believing this.

He also told me to put cinnamon in the formula for my 4 month old to make him take it better.  I cant find any where else on the world wide web that advocates putting spices of any sort into a bottle.  I am trying to get a referral for another doc, but in the mean time, please, help, commiserate...something.

My husband and I are exhausted.  He only sleeps now if he is reclined on one of our chests, and even then he fusses so much that we are unable to sleep while he is there.  We work different shifts, so there really isnt much time where one of us can take him so the other can sleep.

It seems like after all the intervention, my son has only gotten worse, and has not improved since I changed my diet.  How long should I expect to go before he improves?

Re: New and unsure

  • I'm so sorry.  This sounds so stressful and upsetting.  I don't have anything wise at all but just wanted to send (((hugs))).  I hope you're able to get a 2nd opinion very soon.
