So, I have always thought that reflux was over diagnosed, so of course as fate would have it DS was diagnosed today with reflux. However, I am not sure what to do. So far the only sign is that he occasionally coughs and loudly clears his throat (although it is a scary sound). He does not cry and he is not fussy. He can make this noise/cough and then go back to smiling and playing so it doesn't seem to bother him much.
I am hesitant to medicate him since he doesn't seem upset and his weight gain is fantastic. He has doubled his birth weight at 7.5 weeks. He spits up sometimes after feeding but not always.
The Dr. first recommend zantac but I mentioned that I heard it causes headaches and that it opens babies up to a higher risk of infection, so she recommend prevacid. I know prevacid isn't approved for use in infants and studies have shown that it does no better than the placebo. I don't really want to use a medication that isn't approved for infant use.
So I guess I am just kind of asking people what they would do. I know this isn't technically a breastfeeding question but I feel like you ladies have more smarts than a lot of the other boards.
Am I horrible for wanting to wait it out (most "reflux" disappears by 6 weeks). I mean really my main issue is that he is NOT fussy at all. He rarely cries. So it seems silly to medicate him for something that doesn't really seem to bother him.

DS was diagnosed at 4 weeks with silent reflux, and is on Zantac. He gets it 3x/day -- we tried only 2, but the symptoms reappeared about 12:30, so he gets it at daycare. They can tell when they go even 5 minutes past his normal dose (they shoot for 12:00, but he's okay until 12:30) because he starts screaming in pain. Dose of zantac calms him down and he usually goes to sleep! We thought about trying to wean him down/off of it after his 6 month appt, but DH forgot to give him his morning dose, and he was screaming in pain 20 minutes after eating... probably not gonna happen yet.
So, if your LO isn't in pain, then don't medicate! I hate having to have my baby on medicine, but he was eating every 60-90 minutes and screaming in pain between most feedings! Some people believe in chiropractors being able to help resolve/calm the symptoms down. I believe in chiropractic care and my chiro does treat infants/children, but DH is scared to let him try.
