The flu shot does not protect against...

the common cold. Unless I've missed something major in recent years?

DD has a terrible cough that mainly bothers her at night. She has woken up every night since Sunday due to her coughing. I kept her home from school yesterday morning just so she could get more sleep, but took her in the afternoon. At least 4 or 5 other children in her class have the same hacking cough right now (no other symptoms, just a really nasty cough). Some of the moms and I were talking about it and how it's inevitable that the yucky cough will go around to all the kids. TWO other moms said something like, "Oh, LO hasn't gotten that cough. I'm so glad he has his flu shot!"

  • My guess is that it's the same exact people who are baffled when their kids get a stomach bug because "they had their flu shot." There's a lot of misinformation about just what the flu shot is for.

yep, I still can't convince my mother that when she or anyone else has gastroenteritis that it isn't influenza.  Sigh.

  • I work in a pharmacy and it baffles me on a daily basis the amount of people who are upset that they have caught a cold/strep throat/gastro because they got their flu shot...

This, completely. I swear, I've had this conversation with my DH a hundred times. He says that our son has "the flu" because he's been having diarrhea. I've tried my best to explain it to him, but he just will not relent. I actually sent him links to the CDC and also to webmd explaining the difference between Influenza and Gastroenteritis.  Hopefully that will be the end of that conversation, because the next time I hear about DS's "flu" I'm going to lose it.

This made me LOL because a friend of mine just posted on facebook last week about how the flu shot is worthless because she still got the stomach flu.

I was so tempted to ask what she was even talking about because I have never heard of a "stomach flu". lol

  • Lots of people use the term "the flu" meaning something more than just a little sniffle/cough or for a stomach bug. I am guilty of it, however, I do know the difference and I totally chuckled at the op's description.

  • Pertussis is going around our area and I think that I had it last week and the kids may have too! (I was tested, havent gotten results yet...).

    Good health to you!

  • DD has a horrible cough now too.  I took her in and on top of it she has strep too.

I teach 1st grade and more than half my class is hacking their heads off.  I had 6 kids out of 27 out sick today with it.  I can't wait until Winter Break to get away from it all and they'll clean all of our classrooms really good.  Ugh!

Eek, strep! Hope she gets better quickly.

  • Perhaps what that mother meant was that your child's symptoms could possibly be the flu.  Cough is one of the symptoms of Flu.  From the website, "Flufacts.com":

The common symptoms of the flu include:

    • Fever (100?F or greater)
    • Headache
    • Muscle aches
    • Chills
    • Tiredness
    • Cough
    • Runny nose (more common in children than adults)

If it were my child, and she had a terrible cough, I'd think it could be the Flu or worse, whooping cough, and take her in.

Thanks. The worst has passed now and she has been able to sleep again the last couple of nights. She didn't have a fever over 100 or any other symptoms besides tiredness because the coughing kept her awake at night (very little coughing during the day). I would have never sent her to school at all if she did have flu like symptoms.

  • I sympathize. DS and I have the hacky cough too. I've been battling the cold for two weeks now. Finally starting to feel better....
