What would you do? (mini rant)

Ok, so my doc has been saying from the start "We could induce by the 20th" and I have been saying "no, it will happen when it happens." Yesterday, I come to find out she will be on vacation over my due date. Ah-HA! So that's what was with the big push to induce. She gave me the run-down of who it may be that would deliver if I were to go into labor while she was gone, and to be honest, I am cool with that. This is no doctor's first baby, and frankly, the nurses do most of the work anyway.  I was just more curious what you all would do.  Are you super attached to your doc? Would you like the scheduled labor? (Of course for those of you who NEED to schedule, this is a different story.)  For those of you with few complications, what would you do?

Re: What would you do? (mini rant)

  • I haven't had any complications (knock on wood) so I would just let nature take its course. That is, if you're ok with another doc delivering your baby!

There are three OBs in the office I go to, and I like them all so I am just waiting until LO comes naturally.

And holy cow, you're almost there!!

  • If you are comfortable with the other doctors delivering your baby I would wait.

  • It would definitely be my preference to let nature take its course, even if it meant my usual doctor couldn't be there.

This for me too. I would also be pissed to find out that my doctor had been pressing induction because she is going on vacation.

  • My MW is only actually on duty in L&D for 24 hours a week (2 12 hr shifts). I hope she will be there, but my chances are slim, so I'm prepared. I'd definitely let nature take its course.

  • Unfortunately, my Doc is the King of Induction. ESPECIALLY if it is right before some sort of vacation time. He delivered both of my nephews by induction (right before Spring Break). My #1 DD was due right before Summer Vacation, so the day after our 40 week appt., I was induced due to "low amniotic fluid." Had I thought about it more, I would have tried to wait, especially considering it ended in a C- section... But I was a FTM then.

My guess is, these Docs don't like to let anyone else deliver "their babies" LOL.

Either way, So exciting that you are so close!!!

I agree with both of these! I don't have a problem with my OB, but I wouldn't say I'm attached to him either. I haven't even talked to my own OB about my delivery yet, so I'd be fine with whomever at this point.

  • With my last baby, I ended up being induced on a day my dr wasn't available. I had PIH and was so uncomfortable. Came in and was already contracting so they really just broke my water. The other dr did just fine. Like you said, they just catch at the end so it's not that big of a deal.

  • I would much rather prefer to wait till I naturally go into labor on my own rather than being induced.  I want to make extra sure that LO is ready to come out and while him being ready a little early would be great I would rather him be late if that is what he needs to get ready.

  • I am hoping to have my OB deliver this baby, just because I really like her. But, whoever is there will be fine. I had a wonderful doctor, who is not with my practice but part of the on-call rotation, deliver my daughter and he was wonderful.

I also liked that I ended up with an older doctor in that situation because C had a big head and large shoulders, so we had to be careful getting her shoulders to pass.

I would, in your case, just let nature take its course.

  • I met almost every doctor in my practice so I could be prepared if mine was unavailable.  I would prefer mine because he is a no bull kind of doctor (tells it like it is and is also very funny) but if someone else needs to deliver that's fine as well.

  • I was actually thinking about this because my practice rotates weekends.  I think I would like to meet the other dr(s) before they are actually delivering the baby, but would not induce early over it.
  • I go to a practice with 5 doctors. I was a little upset at my first prenatal when my chosen doc suggested that I schedule appointments with all 5 docs in the practice because the chances are the one you don't meet is the one on call when baby decides to arrive. I would love for my primary to deliver (because she's awesome), but really glad that I have taken the time to get to know the other docs.

If I found out that my doc was pushing me to an unnecessary induction just to accomodate her schedule though, I would NOT be happy. Although, there is a part of me that wishes I just knew exactly when my LO is going to arrive!

  • I'm all for nature taking it's course.  But I'm super attached to my OB - he also delivered my son and I can't imagine anyone else delivering my baby.  I really trust him and would be heartbroken if he were unable to deliver my daughter.  My OB and I also have a little bit of a personal relationship though - he is not just some random doctor to me.

If the situation were me I would opt to induce so that he could deliver my baby.  If I were not so attached to him then I would not even consider it.

  • There are about 10 doctors at the maternity clinic, so we don't actually choose one doctor.  They want you to rotate through all of them so you can have a chance to meet everyone.  Who ever is on call at the time you're in labour, is the one that you get.  Personally, I like them all and have had a really good experience with this system.

Maybe you could start scheduling your appointments with the doctor who will be there for your due date just to get to know them.

  • I would only induce for medical reasons

  • After having a doctor I didn't know deliver my first I would absolutely schedule with my doctor.  It's not standard practice in my OB's office to meet all of the doctors (there are 9 total) so when I went into labor while my OB was in Hawaii I knew it would be interesting.

Not that I didn't trust the doctor because, like you said, mine wasn't his first delivery BUT it wasn't the same as having MY doctor there.  This dude was stretching me manually without telling me why, he was brash when telling me how and when to push, he used forceps without me knowing, etc.  My doctor would have never done that.  I was so euphoric after DS was born that I never got answers to my questions.  The doctor checked on me the next day and I've never seen him again.

  • I don't really care who delivers my baby. It would be nice if it were my OB but if it's not then whatever, as long as they know what they are doing. I want this baby to stay put as long as possible.

  • I'd rather my baby gets to keep to his own schedule than my doctor's vacation schedule.

And to be honest? my doctor did VERY little in my last delivery. I'm at a teaching hospital so there was a resident there anyway... and for all I know it WAS his first delivery!

  • We are scheduled for an RCS on jan 12 if baby doesnt come on time, due jan 6th. The thought originally was friday jan 13th. but our Dr isnt in that day, not even for on calls. So we chose the 12th to be with our Dr.  I have had a few complications, and this will be a VBAC if things go the way they are supposed to.

In your situation, I would still just let things happen. If I were to go into labor next weekend while our Dr is on vacation(she is actually, for christmas) I would be fine with a different DR. Do I prefure my Dr? YES, but the other Dr's on staff have my records and my plans for this birth are in there too.

  • Neither of my kids were delivered by my OB. It was the last thing on my mind. I spent more time with the nurses anyway :)

  • I love my OB but I do not want an induction for any reason other than medical necessity.  I'm planning for a natural birth and once you start augmenting birth or introducting interventions it quickly can become a domino effect and end in a c/s.  My dr tries to attend all her births but if I had to have the on-call dr from her practice I'd be fine with that even though I haven't met any of the other drs.

If you're cool with another dr delivering your baby I say wait and let LO come when he/she is ready.

  • Honestly, the first time my doctor told me she wanted me to induce early just for the hell of it, I would've found a new doctor.
