Can't take it anymore.. the crashing!

My 4.5 year old loves crashing on the floor!  Our entire living room floor is covered in foam mats, so she flings herself on the floor as hard as she can, jumps as hard as she can, etc.  She's 48 lbs and my house is literally shaking.

I literally feel like I can't get any peace and quiet, and she's teaching my 2 year old to crash (because she imitates).

And no matter how many times I tell her not to or put her in time out, she still does it. Does anyone else's kid do this?

Re: Can't take it anymore.. the crashing!

  • She's super smart and doesn't have any sensory issues - she knows it will make me come over to tell her not to do it, so it is for attention.  It is pretty much like anything else she does for attention, I was just venting because it drives me crazy.

I'm going to get ripped for this but- crashing into things is a sensory seeking behavior associated with SPD. One effective strategy is joint compressions- jumping rope, climbing or a minitramp can help.

Auntie, this response makes me glad I have a mini-tramp waiting for Xmas morning for my boy who loves to crash.

  • why can't you get rid of the foam mats?  Or just put them in a very small area?

also - OP - didn't you post yesteday or the day before about your 4.5 yo's negative, attention seeking behavior w/ DH?  Is there a way you can get her some more stimulation - PT preschool/daycare, gymnastics, etc.

  • I'd like to find something else -

DD goes to preschool MWF 8:30-11:30.  I'm trying to find something for Tue/Th morning, like another preschool or program, but it's tough.

Also we did gymnastics before, but because DH can't help out with our 2 year old, I have to figure out something that would work.  Last time we did it, it was like 1 big room and the whole time, the 2yo just tried to run out with the big kids, and just screamed and cried most of the time because she couldn't.  So basically I have to scout out places that have separate waiting areas that I can tolerate spending 45m-1hr with my 2 year old.  I don't know of anything that is purely dropoff for this age.

  • Look again - I've just noticed in the last month that things start getting to be drop-off for gymnastics and dance starting around 3.5, 4 - when the kids are safely potty-trained and can last an hour w/o the potty.
