German Christmas Cookies

I have a new colleague in my office from Germany.  He had just been over for a meeting and bought back a wonderful assortment of German Christmas cokies to share with all of us. 

The cookies are so yummy -  I am trying to make them last until lunchtime.  I forgot to bring a snack with me so this was a very welcome treat.

    My dad's grandma came over on the boat during the Weimar era.  The cookies made from the secret family recipes are seriously some of the most vile things.  I've been reading other recipes for the same cookie though (lebkuchen), and I think the ones my family makes are an insane outlier.  There's one where the recipes I see are only candied orange peel and other orangey flavors, but the one we have is all kinds of candied fruit plus anise. barrrf.

    There are a lot of spices in them.  There were 5 different items - one cookie was really soft - it had cinnamon in it and a little chocolate coating on the bottom.  It was so yummy.  There was a cinnamon star and a little chocolate cake type cookie.  I  have two more on my desk to eat.

    We are having a food day at work today.  There is a ton of unhealthy food surrounding me.  I love it.  I will probably be sick later though.
