3rd Trimester

Really??? What they said it isn't true.

So they told me I was going to have a 9.5lb baby with ds 1, he was 6.14lb.  I'm so tired of docs freaking momma's out about the size of their babies. This time they said he is over 3lbs already. Do I believe them...maybe.

Those with children already are were they off? FTM are they telling you your baby is going to be huge or are freaking out about the size of your baby?

Re: Really??? What they said it isn't true.

  • My sister was induced the week after Thanksgiving at 39 weeks b/c she measured 41 weeks at her 37 week appt.

My niece was 7lb 4oz. The exact same size as her sister who was born at 41 weeks. So, she was bigger, but she wasn't the monster baby they OB made her out to be!!

  • The thing is that doctors can only really guess at this point.  Even an ultrasound measurement can be off by a pound or 2 either way.  I don't put much stock in a doctor's estimate of baby's size.  Even though I have a family history of big babies, my doctor keeps trying to insist we are having a normal size baby.  I'm not correcting him because I don't want any cause for him to try to suggest a c-section.

  • I'm a FTM & at my 28 wk appt baby girl was 3 lbs & I was measuring a couple weeks early but at this past appt i was measuring just right! So as long as my dr. isn't worried neither am I! I was a big baby so I guess she may be too!

  • I never had thos measurements for my first DD.  She was born a week late at 8lbs 1oz
  • My growth ultrasound (which I got for measuring big) was dead on.  DS was 8 lbs 9 oz.  He was a little big for me and it was hard to get him out, but it all ended up ok.  I didn't get induced for it or anything.  I'm curious to see if this one is bigger, smaller or the same since it's a girl.

  • My SIL had her baby girl in May at 38 weeks. The day before she went into labor she had a doctor's appointment and they estimated the baby's weight at 6 pounds. She was 10 pounds 3 oz.  They were off by 4 pounds! It will be hard for me to take any estimate serious after that!

  • My doc told me at 32 weeks that my LO was about 4 1/2 - 5 lbs. She said there is a good chance that he will be over 9 lbs!  She also said that towards the end she will give me an ultrasound if she feels that he will be big and if he is measuring over 9 lbs I could choose to have a C-section.  I know that the measurements can be off, so as of now.. I would turn down a C-section.  I am a first time mom and would like to have a vaginal birth.

  • With my last baby, the ob guessed that she would be 7.5lbs when she was born.  I ended up being induced a few days early for other reasons and DD was 7lbs 4oz.  She was pretty spot on, but she was just guessing by feeling my belly and measuring.  I will also say that there was never a time that I measured ahead or behind.

  • Maybe take it as a grain of salt and realize they can't be 100% correct or may not even be in the ballpark?!

  • They told me via ultrasound that my son was 8lbs, 13 oz. He was born the next day and he was 8lbs, 13oz.
  • At my doc appointment last time, my doc measured my belly and told me I was measuring 3 weeks ahead, and that I'd have a big baby. I had an ultrasound last week, and the measurements that they got there said I was measuring spot on for 28 weeks. If they're measuring just by tape measure, then I don't trust the accuracy of sizing based off of that alone. I'm sure there's more than one reason other than the baby why my belly might be 3 inches off (=3 weeks ahead)... like Christmas cookies... lots and lots of Christmas cookies.

My BFF was told she was going to have an 11lb baby... He was 9lbs. He was still a big boy, but not 11lbs.

  • My Dr. has never made any sort of guess.  She just says, "Baby seems to be growing right on track"  I've never gotten a guess with an actual number in pounds.
  • I wouldn't trust my regular OB's weight guess but I trust the specialists I see! Their equipment is a thousand times better and its a top hospital.

  • I had an u/s at 40w3d with LO #1 and the u/s tech estimated her weight on the dot.  She was born at 41 weeks weighing 7 pounds 6 ounces.  She did warn me that the estimates can be off by a pound either way, though.

  • I never got an estimate along then way 1st time around, but DH asked my OB in the delivery room, just before I started pushing, how big she thought baby was. Her estimate was 8 to 8.5 pounds. She was 6 lb 9 oz. That was based entirely on feel and such, though.

  • With DD I had an US at 37 weeks because I was measuring big.  They estimated her weight at that time to be 7lbs 3oz.  They told me to expect a 9lb baby if I went to 40 weeks, but never mentioned induction.  I delivered her 6 days late, so almost 4 weeks after my US and she was 7lbs 7oz.

Like a PP said, it's just an estimate and can be off by 2lbs either way.  I work in L&D and see women being induced or having a c/s for a "too big" baby for moms body proportions.  In my experience the docs I work with won't suggest an induction or c/s unless they are very concerned about it, and the majority of the time they are right.

That being said, I personally wouldn't agree to a c/s or induction for a "big baby".  I would want to go into labor on my own and try vaginally first.  If I end up with a c/s, so be it.  I'm already measuring big and they've already told me I'll have an US at 37 weeks like my last pregnancy so we'll see what happens.

I'm totally lurking here but with Colin he was measuring big for weeks and then they ordered me a growth ultrasound. The ultrasound said he was measuring 10 pounds 1 oz. I was 40 weeks at the time. They scheduled me a c-section for 4 days later and he ended up being 11 pounds. Thank god I had a c-section. Trust your doctor and if I were you I'd just go with what they suggest.

  • They didn't give me an estimate with DD.  I loved my Dr office with her (in Savannah, GA), because they just didn't make guesses. They said "baby looks fine and about the right size" and that was it.

They haven't guessed with this baby either, but I've also only have one fundal height measurement and my 20 week scan.

  • 6 days before my c section with my DS, they estimated him to be 5, maybe 6lbs.  He was 9lbs 2oz, and 21 inches long at 36 weeks. I had actually borrowed a few preemie clothes but he barely fit the NB coming home outfit I had.

  • In my experience, doctors have been significantly off, causing many of my good friends and approve a c-section for their babies that ended up being 7 lbs instead of 9 lbs. Honestly, I think at least half of these are just so the doctor can schedule the c-section delivery without it interrupting their practice and appointments.

My former doctor told me my son was 9 lbs at 36 weeks. He was born at 9lbs at 41 weeks. Unless you have GD, I wouldn't be at all concerned about macrosomia. If you have a healthy pregnancy and are eating well, then your body is designed to deliver your baby, regardless of it's size.

  • with DD the OB said he thought she would be 8lbs...she was born 6lb14oz

my friend was told at least 9lbs and her DD was 7lb10oz.

  • I had a growth scan at 36 weeks because I was measuring big. The tech said based on the measurements she predicted LO would be between 8 1/2 - 9 pounds. LO was bang on 9 pounds.

But I'm 5' 10 so I never expected a small baby, and that size estimate didn't bother me at all.

  • I will say that my dr also told me that unless baby is measuring in the 90th percentile or above, they aren't concerned and don't take any special measures besides just keeping an eye on growth.

  • With DD#1, they estimated her weight at 4lb 6oz the day before I was induced (IUGR). She was 4lb 10oz at birth. So, I trust my OB's staff with their estimates. Plus, I get a lot of u/s with my pregnancies (complications), so maybe that makes a difference, as well as having well trained staff, up to date equipment and a cooperative baby?

  • My daughter had a growth u/s the day before she was born, and it was very accurate. My son had a growth u/s at 36w, and was born 2 w later. He was heavier by just over a pound, which is in line for 2w of growth, I think. i wouldn't trust a belly measurement at all though.

  • My growth u/s put my daughter at over 10lbs at 39 weeks. the next day I had a csection because my OB scared the crap put of me and she was 8lbs 12oz. This time I will most likely refuse a growth ultrasound. I want a vbac, and I don't want anyone telling me how big my baby is based on an u/s that can be off +/-2lbs.

  • My Dr is checking me in 2 weeks cuz my fundal measurement is big.  My family is fairly tall - I'm the shortest and I'm 5'8", my sisters are both over 5"10" and my brothers and dad are all over 6'0" DH is the tallest in his family at 5'10", so I'm not expecting a small baby (length wise).

I don't plan on getting induced or scheduling a c-section (as of now), but if I go into labor and nothing is progressing or baby is in distress, then I will consider a c-section. I would like to at least attempt a vaginal birth before resorting to surgery.

  • DS was over a pound smaller than the growth u/s estimated. My doc made it sound like I had to induce so he wouldn't get too big and require a c-section, so I did and it sucked. Unless baby or I were in clear danger, there's no way in heIl I'd ever get induced again. I don't have GD or any other health issues that would create an abnormally-sized baby, and my body isn't going to grow a baby it can't get out.

  • Neither my OB (last pregnancy) nor my midwife (this pregnancy) has ever made any attempt to determine the size of the baby. Nor would I put any stock in any estimates, or what the guesses might mean for labour and delivery.

  • FTM here, had a c-section based on large for gestational age at 39 weeks- thanking God I went with my doctor's suggestion. My son was 9 pounds 5 ounces, but even more important, he had a nuchal cord and a true knot. I was 100 pounds prepregnancy, everyone couldn't believe I carried him around at that weight.

  • My doc did an ultrasound to check fluid levels at 35 weeks. At that time my son was measuring at 7pds 4oz.  at 38 weeks my son came out 8pds 2oz...so I think they were probably pretty accurate.  Ive heard both sides about them being right on for weight measurements and I've heard of them being like 2+ pds off.
