What do you do when LO grabs the spoon

Hannah wants to grab/ chew on the spoon when I am trying to get her to eat. Drives me nuts! It usually results in food in her hair, up her nose, in her eyes, gagging herself with the spoon ect. She screams when I take it away. Should I just let her have at it or what?

Re: What do you do when LO grabs the spoon

  • I normally give Hayden her own spoon while we are eating so she can bang it on her tray or suck on it while we are feeding. If she keeps it in there to long, I will move it away and feed her with the spoon I am holding. Maybe try that.

  • It kind of depends on her mood.

Sometimes she really wants to feed herself and she actually will.  She will put the spoon in her mouth and suck all the food off and then hold it out to me like more.

Other times if she is just being stuborn/pissy whatever I will give her another spoon to play with while I feed her with another one.  It's actually a good way to get her to open her mouth because she will open it for the spoon she's holding and then I will sneak in my spoon that has the food on it.

  • I just let him have it. Sometimes I'll take it, put some food on it, and then give it back so at least he's eating something. Last night I ended up just giving him the whole bowl and the spoon. It was a HUGE mess but he loved it. :)

  • We usually give DS the spoon to chew on while we're getting his food ready. When it's time to eat, if he grabs the spoon, we let him "help" with the bite, but keep a hold on the spoon ourselves. It can get messy, but I figure it's not so bad for DS to see how to hold the spoon and bring it to his mouth.

  • I would! I let DD hold/attempt to eat from the spoon. So far, she just gags herself if it goes in to far (that's what she said!) but if I hold the spoon while she holds it we can control how far in it goes. She makes a complete mess but its fun :-)

  • It does end up being messy, but I let LO take. If not he sticks his hands in his mouth takes the food out and puts it back in. A spoon is a lot less messy and I figure he is learning to feed himself...

  • We have given my daughter a spoon for a little over a month in prep for giving her real food.  We kind of jumped the gun because of all of the BLW talk and gave in to feeding her two days ago.  She is surprisingly good at getting the food in her mouth with the spoon.  We have only used the spoon with oatmeal/bananas so far.  If you are ok with the mess, let it loose!

  • I've been having the same issue and it's so frustrating when you're trying to feed them.  I've tried giving her another spoon, but then she wants to put that one in her mouth and I can't get the spoon with her food on in her mouth.  Sometimes we're able to keep her hands at her sides in her chair so she can't grab the spoon, but that usually only lasts for a minute.
