  • With Nico plain Vaseline worked really well. Better than the other medicated creams.

  • Do not use plain baby wipes to clean his bottom. Try rinsing the wipes throughly in warm water before use. We have our changing pad on the bathroom counter so sometimes I'll just put down a towel and gently wash Emily's bottom with baby soap/shampoo and water. *ETA - to dry, we usually use a patting motion with some of our baby washcloths. or just a clean corner of the towel on the changing pad ! I've heard of people using a blow dryer on cool but I'm pretty sure Emily would freak her freak if I tried that.

The key is to get their bottom super dry before applying ANYTHING to it. It only makes things worse if their bum is still wet from acidic wipes and then you slather cream over it.

Lotrimin only helps if it's yeast and there's no indication this is a yeast rash.

We always use aquaphor. There is nothing magical about any of the regular creams really. You're just trying to seal the skin from further irritation. Aquaphor is a nice barrier to urine and doesn't irritate. There are some more homeopathic diaper cream options with soothing things in them but I'm not as familiar with those.

Once you know the worst of the poop is over, if you can, keep him naked! Wash his bum good and let it air out (no cream). You may have to clean up a few messes but it will speed the healing dramatically. Moisture is the enemy.

  • We ran into that way too often with DS, unfortunately. Aquaphor was by far the most successful in repairing the skin and creating a barrier to minimize the stinging.  Ditto the no wipe, rec, too.  And as much as possible, let him air out.
  • Is he at daycare or are you able to give him baths after each dirty diaper?  Our doc told us to give him a bath after every dirty diaper and sprinkle a 1/4 cup of baking soda in to try and neutralize the acid that is on the skin.  She said to also use dove sensitive soap.  She also recommended the lotrimin but we didn't really have to resort to that since she also prescribed happy hiney.  I'd try the other things first before asking for a RX of happy hiney.  It definitely is like torture to have to listen to them cry and know you just have to let whatever it is pass.  Hope he gets to feeling better soon.
  • Warm baths, and we mixed aquaphor with maylox on smeared it on her butt. The malox soothes the acid in the poop and won't let it continue to irritate his skin.
