Food questions

I feel totally clueless when it comes to a baby's nutritional needs.

Once I wean/drop the morning nursing session, should I just substitute formula/cow's milk?  When do babies start eating breakfast, and what types of foods should I offer?

A few of you mentioned turkey meatballs - Do you have a recipe that you follow?

I'm trying to get away from pureed vegetables now that C likes to self feed -- can I send a small container of frozen veggies to DC, or is that a faux pas?

Currently, C nurses around 5:45am, then at DC he gets a fruit snack & formula around 9-10 before naptime.

Re: Food questions

  • Here's the turkey meatball recipe we use: https://weelicious.com/2008/02/15/chicken-meatballs/ (we sub ground turkey for the chicken).

I think at that stage (he's under 1, right?) if you're dropping a nursing session you should sub formula. Not sure if you want to do a bottle or sippy, but he still needs that nutrition if you're not nursing at that time.

We would usually nurse in the morning before we left to daycare, and then they would feed him some solids when he got there (oatmeal mixed with fruit usually, he ate that forever).

  • We didn't worry about nutritional needs until he was 1.  Before that formula (or bm) fulfills their major needs.  So solid food is mostly about trying new things & textures.  Sure, it's best to offer healthy food but they won't suffer from malnutrition if he goes on an anti-veggie strike for a month.

However, after 1 year old w/ cow's milk, we did one cup in the morning right when he got up & then another 8oz sprinkled throughout the day.  For meals, he mostly eats what we do & I try not to stress if he's picky one moment from the next.

  • We buy a lot of frozen meatballs - whatever brand has the least filler/crap and is on sale. Usually from MOM's or TJ's.

I'd replace the nursing session with formula, if he's already having that. Otherwise you might be able to go to whole milk, but ask your pedi.

Ask your dcp if they do breakfast in the morning (ours does and I think most do). I can't remember how old C was when we discovered Van's waffles, but he basically has one of those, plus some kind of fruit, every. single. day. He drinks a good 1-2 cups of milk in the morning, so I count that as his protein, otherwise I'd add some cheese or something proteiny. On weekends, he has whatever we're having (minus eggs b/c he's allergic).

ETA: about veggies - at that point, for lunch he already eating dinner leftovers, which includes a fair amount of veg. Otherwise, the emergency lunch is a medley of frozen veggies, meatballs and TJ's frozen brown rice, with various seasonings, as per Kendra's post awhile ago.

  • I am by no means an expert, but I nurse J in the morning, and then DH gives him breakfast - usually cereal (oatmeal or rice cereal) mixed with fruit puree. He loves it. Then we follow up with some banana and puffs, usually.

kastle - thanks for saying that about the nutrition/food. Last night, J ate potatoes and bananas for dinner because I just couldn't manage to cook him something green. I felt kind of guilty, but I feel better now.

someone on here said that they thought about veggie needs in terms of the week, not the day.  this mindset mostly saves my sanity.  before turning one, sprout would eat whatever we put in front of him & ask for seconds.  Now, if it's not covered in tomato sauce, it's unlikely he's going to eat any veggie.  :(

  • I agree with pp that before age 1, you should substitute a nursing session with formula (or cow milk if your pedi says to do that). I'm pretty sure M was getting 3 meals a day by the time he was 10 months old, so you can definitely add breakfast now, but I wouldn't substitute a solid meal of breakfast for BM or formula. It sounds like DCP is already giving him a snack at 9 am, which is a fine time for breakfast. Our breakfast foods include oatmeal, cheerios, waffles, pancakes, muffins, breads (banana, pumpkin), and fruit.

  • I have to ask G what we did when J was that age - I can't remember when we switched from our food to DCP's food.  There was also a period where she provided food, but we provided (cow's) milk.  I don't think J was eating all DCP-provided food until 2-y.o. (or was it 1? I can't remember...)- until then, we packed food.  My memory is failing me on the timing of it all.  Now, J eats DCP food for breakfast and lunch.

I'd try to ask Y - but, if you're super confused (which I remember I was at that stage, too - we just sort of bumbled through), this seems like a legit question to ask MMM's, i.e., "We're in a transition period, I'm not sure what's included in the weekly fee, and what the general guidelines are for food provision - and, I feel weird asking Y about it..."

  • LW--we should do a conference call :-)

  • Thank you everyone!  It is a confusing phase.  We are a crock pot family, and because those meals have so many ingredients in them (usually higher sodium too), I'm trying to give C simpler foods for now.
