Up All Night (nrbr)

I went to bed at 10pm tonight and I woke up promptly at 2am.  I have been up ever since!  While laying in bed I realized that 4 hours will probably feel pretty good once baby is here.  However, I am really questioning how it will feel in 2 hours when I have to get up for work.  Ugh.  I thought I was hungry and usually I do not get up to eat, I just don't have it in me to make the trek down the stairs to choose food.  Tonight though, I did.  I had some graham crackers and milk.  Except now my tummy is just rolling so I am thinking maybe I wasn't hungry and have perhaps caught the flu-bug my husband had earlier this week.  So of course, I figured why not bump?  I am awake anyway...

What do you do when you can't sleep?

  • I bump, play facebook games, watch stand up comedy on netflix, take a hot shower, drink tea.... was playing with my DD's legos at 3:30am last week. Real lego's not the duplo little kid ones. one time I caught myself pacing.

    My insomnia is kind of hormone related, as well as stress/anxiety. (Anxiety disorder) and I hate taking meds to sleep, so no benadryl or ambien for me.

  • I just continue to lay there and refuse to open my eyes.  I kind of go in denial.  It ends up with getting more and more anxious and tossing and turning.  If I cover my head with a pillow, sometimes I can go back to sleep.  But I have been known to just lay there for hours...I figure it counts for some relaxation.

  • some random helpful hints for getting to bed.

    Self relaxation technique. If I really want to get to sleep, I count. yup... counting. I usually do the "one little indian" chant, up to ten and back down to one. after a few times, the mind clears and lets me drift off. I suppose sheep would work too.

    There are lots of relaxation techniques out there. I learned a bunch of them at some point from my therapist, but it takes forever to explain some of them.

    Things that are o.k. to take during PG:

    Hot chamomile tea. drink with very little sugars or you defeat the purpose.Sometimes with a piece of toast, buttered helps you get to sleep better. (fuller tummy)

    Valerian root was approved by my OB, check with yours before taking, its a mild mild natural muscle relaxer.

    Malatonin is a sleep regulator that is used by many people, adults, and children. also, check with OB before taking.

  • I know many prefer not to use OTC drugs, but I always feel it is more important to be well rested.  My doctor recommended Unisom for morning sickness, so I assume it is still ok to use for sleep occasionally as well.  And I am pretty sure I heard the same about Tylenol PM, but don't quote me on that.

  • That sucks.  I listen to hypnobirh relaxatons to battle the insomnia. You can download a free relaxation app called Relax and Sleep Well.  A friend of mine uses it to get to sleep. It doesnt have anything to do with birth.

  • I usually get up and stretch bc my hips are usually achy by this time. I bump and read. Usually get something to eat like yogurt and maybe drink some warm milk with cinnamon. Nothing really works. I just have to wait until I actually get tired again.
