1st Trimester

Date Discrepancy?

So here is the background: My periods became very irregular within the last two years, and it was causing issues with TTC. I took Metformin and got pregnant. My first day of my last period was October 1st, which would have put me at 9w4d at my first ultrasound last week. When they did the measurements, however, they told me that I am more around 8w4d, so a week off.

I am going in on Monday for a second ultrasound, and I know that they stated that this happens a lot because the dates are frequently off, especially if you had irregular periods, but I'm super nervous. We saw the heart beat and everything was great a week ago. But now I'm nervous.

Did anyone else have this problem?

Re: Date Discrepancy?

  • Yep same here..I have long cycles so according to the "charts" im supposed to be 11 weeks but I ovulate a week later than the charts. Ergo..im really 10 weeks, the ultrasound measured excatly to my ovulation date so all is well. No worries

  • That's comforting to hear, especially from someone further along than me.

    Thank you!

  • This actually helps me out as well.  I'm going for a 2nd U/S on the 27th but the first one they did because I was cramping/spotting at what I thought was 5 weeks.  I was upset because they didn't see anything at all.  Not even the sac.  So now that it has dawned on me I'm probably a week behind what they are telling me since I ovulate late, it makes more sense.  Phew!
  • You just probably don't have a clockwork 28 day cycle.  That doesn't mean there is a problem.  I didn't before I had DD either.  I ovulated late & had a long cycle then.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • I had my last menstrual period on oct 6 and my doc told me tht i was 9 weeks or so when i went in fr my appt. But since i knew that i ovulated late i insisted that i was only 4 weeks. They did a blood test and u/s and told me i was just over 4 weeks.

  • You just ovulated later than "normal."  Most docs will use your LMP as a starting due date guide, but will readjust according to the actual size of your baby when you get your first ultrasound.  I wouldn't worry.  You just ovulate later than what is considered the "norm."

  • I think I am also a week behind.  When I had my US at what should have been 6 weeks, there was a gestational sac, but no fetal pole, no hb.  My HCG continued to double so they are not concerned.  I go back on the 22nd for a second US to confirm dating.

  • With my daughter, I had 29 day cycles, every month, never failed. According to my last cycle with her I should have been a bit over 9 weeks at my first u/s with a EDD at May 6. In reality I was only 7 weeks and some, a 9 day difference. My EDD changed to May 15. I delivered on May 10 to a perfectly healthy 8lb baby! Don't worry, all is fine!!!

  • O.o why do all of you have an ultra sound so early? My OB doesn't even want to see me until I'm 12 weeks, and he's supposed to be the best in the area. Must not panic....

Anyways I hear the ultra sounds can look to be a few weeks off, they usually test the HCG levels in your blood to estimate how far along you are in addition to the date of your last period. That's what my general practitioner did anyways. Either way as long as you and baby are healthy one week in a 9 month process won't seem so big down the road.

  • My OB does an u/s so early to test for viability. They like to know as soon as possible that its going to be a viable pregnancy. I know this sounds scary but just because there is no cramping or bleeding, doesn't always mean that there is a live fetus. It actually gives me great piece of mind to see my babies in an early u/s.
