Winter Coat

I live in Chicago... and it's not THAT cold yet (but sure it's not for long).

Really want the North Face Arctic Parka (cute and sooooooooo warm)  but... even going a size up for me barely fit over my belly (not sure why I even bothered trying it on... as if I can "invest" $299 on a coat when I have this protrusion in the middle of me).

I have a stupid ON ruffle coat, which is barely cutting it now (in terms of warmth).  Any suggestions on a good, WARM coat?  (might just wear my husbands... I know it's going to get to the point when I don't care what I look like..) and I can't see myself spending $200 on a maternity coat.

How is everyone else bundling up?

Re: Winter Coat

  • I finally broke down and bought a coat..but just got a plus size 1x instead of maternity.  It was actually from a Farm  store (we live in a rural area!), but it was $40 so I figured I'd survive through a plain black coat that I could wear for work and home for a few months and not spend a lot!

  • I got mine at motherhood with a coupon and it ended up being $60.  I can always keep it if we decide to have another or give it away to someone who needs it next winter.  ON has coats too.

ETA:  I am right across the lake from you and can not believe that we still don't have snow and it is 50 degrees out.  Not looking good for a white Christmas!

  • Hubs talked me in to buying the $90 puffy green one from Motherhood.  I'm so glad he did.  I wear it every single day, so it was worth the money after all.  I resisted quite a bit at first.

  • I was totally with all of you on the resistance in buying one and spending $100. I finally broke down Saturday and bought the $90 peacoat at Motherhood for $65.  Totally worth it. Is soooo warm and comfy.
  • Living in Maine, I had to have a winter coat. But I refused to spend a lot of money on a coat I may possibly never wear again. Especially when I already have a very nice LL Bean coat. So I just bought a wool coat from Old Navy for $40. Not sure how warm it will be since our winter has been mild so far.

The other thing I thought about was buying a fleece coat and puffy vest from WM's online maternity section. That would have only been about $24 but not really my style.

  • I had to get a maternity coat from Motherhood Maternity. It's not that cute, but I didn't have a choice. I am normally a small, and was looking at regular coats, trying on size large- the large fit with a little room for my growing belly, while the sleeves, shoulders & chest area were all way too large. Motherhood Maternity has coats that fit perfectly, with plenty of room for growth in the belly. They're really inexpensive too, mine was under $100 and it's pretty warm- I'm in NY. Good luck!!

  • I'm in Chicago and also about 27 weeks so I bit the bullet and bought the puffy coat from Motherhood. I got lucky because it just happend to be $15 off that day for some reason so I think it ended up being like $75. I thought about getting a regular down coat in a bigger size but they were all swimming on me and looked ridiculous. The Motherhood one is nice- it has a hood and felt really warm when I tried it on (I haven't worn it yet because I'm still able to fit into my regular puffy coat). My only wish is that it was longer to block the wind but I haven't seen any maternity coats at any price that were longer than knee length.

Not a bad idea!  Farm and fleet- here I come!  (maybe ugly- but should be warm as he!!)

  • I bought this from Motherhood. However, it really isn't warm enough for me, so I bought this to wear underneath. Hopefully that does the trick! Good luck!
