I need potty training tips!

My son is 3 (will be 4 in March) and he still resists to go to the restroom. Every once in a while he will go pee pee but he has only poopied in the toilet twice. I feel horrible becasue he is the only one in his 3/4 year old class that is still in pullups and doesn't use the toilet all the time.

Should I be worried? Any potty training tips/suggestions?

Thanks!

  • Just to let you know you aren't alone!!  My boys turned 3 in August and one will pee on occasion but not poop and the other one just says "no thanks" when I ask him if he wants to go to the potty.  I am going to hit it hard again after the holidays and hope for the best!

  • Honestly, the best thing we did was just "let it happen" and follow DS's cues.  We didn't follow a specific plan or method...and it just happened.

  • My boy is 3 (will be 4 in June) and the same thing!  He will NOT poop on the potty but will go pee pee whenever I put him on but won't tell me he has to go.  If he poops he tells me he has poopie and "change me".  My first son was trained at 2.5 and was was really easy but I stuck with it hard with him for 3 days straight, not leaving the house and leaving him naked.  I can't with the second, we are on the go!  In pre-K he will sometimes tell the teacher he has to go but rarely but he will go when the entire class goes.  I am hitting it hard with him over holiday break.  Keeping him home for 3 days naked as he seems to not have pee accidents naked but will with underwear or pull-ups.  I will tackle peeing first, then poops!  GL!
  • When my little guy was training I wrapped up prizes in fun wrapping paper and put them in a basket in the bathroom where he could see it but not reach it. When we 1st went into the bathroom he got to pick out whatever prized he wanted from the basket but was only allowed to open it once he went to the bathroom. I even let him hold it while he sat to go #2 or set it on the sink next to him when he was going #1.
Most of the time he would tell me he was done before he did anything so I would just say, "that is fine, put your prize back in the basket and we will try alter" 99% of the time he would stay on the potty until he went. He was determined to get that prize! I never spent a lot of money on prizes because you will go through A LOT of them. I started off buying stuff from the dollar bin but honestly, who wants to fill their house with that crap. I eventually started wrapping up toys he already had around the house! Match Box Cars, books, stuff like that. It worked really well for us.
  • This may sound funny but when LO had to go potty we would sit him on the potty and let him watch the potty song on you tube and watch other kids on the potty. After about a week he finally got the idea and now he sings the potty song EVERY TIME he goes. Its hilarious but thats what worked for us.

  • My dd will be 4 in January.  All year she wore pull ups and would go to the toilet at school.  But not at home and not for Grandmas!  We decided when school started in September to get rid of the pull-ups during the day.  That seemed to work.  She would then pee in the toilet and ask to go.....sometimes we would sit her there. BUT she still wanted her night-time pullup.  She would pee and poop in it every night.  One day we ran out and went cold turkey.  She didn't like it, but now she pees and poops in the toilet.  She still has late night accidents that we are dealing with, but she is mostly trained.

Try a long weekend with just underwear  and see how it goes.  Maybe his afraid or just comfortable doing what he does.
