anyone's LO have surgery?

My LO is going to have eye surgey on the 21st. Her eyes do not want to work together to look at objects and her Optamolagist wants surgery while she is young. Our family has met our deductible for the year so we are getting it done before the new year.

My question is if anyone's LO has been put under Anesthesia and how it went? How were they afterward

  • You may want to post this on the special needs board also.

DS2 has not had any surgery but if glasses do not fix the issues with his eyes (crossing) then we may have to do a surgery for it. So far, the 2 ophthalmologists we have seen are on board for trying to fix the issue with glasses.

DS2 was put under for a MRI though. He did really well with it. While I'd be nervous to have him put under again (just because that feeling is normal) I would not be AS nervous since we've already done it once with a good outcome.

  • DS had to have a circumcision revision a week after his first birthday.  He was under general anesthesia and it went very well.  They had him drink this syrup (can't for the life of me remember the name right now) that made him very relaxed.  They said he didn't even cry when he went under and he didn't have any side effects when he woke up either.  I of course was a crying mess!

  • Yes, LO needed eye surgery for clogged tear ducts. She did ok with the anesthesia. She was cranky when she woke up and cried when she didn't see us. (We couldn't be back there during surgery). She was tired and slept a lot the rest of the day. That was about it.

  • DS had a cyst removed from near his eye right before his first birthday. The worst part was that he couldn't eat after midnight the night before. We scheduled it early in the morning but he was still starving because he usually got a bottle as soon as he woke up. They used the gas mask type of anesthesia on him and he was only under for about 15 minutes. When he was done he was super groggy, cranky, and hungry. After we fed him it still took a few hours for the effects of the anesthesia to wear off but by that evening he was totally back to normal. Good luck! I know that was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do to send my LO off to surgery.

  • DD had to have dental surgery this past summer.  They gave her the syrup and she went back willingly.

I heard her crying in recovery and I thought I would hurt someone if they didn't bring her to me right.fvcking.now.

I was a blubbering mess when they brought her out.

She had a little reaction to the tape they put on her eyes, but overall, it was harder on us than her.

  • DS had surgery for fix a penile adhesion in May when he was 7 months old. I was an absolute mess. He did really well. He fell asleep because we waited for so long for the surgeon so he went willingly to the nurses. According to them he was out under anesthesia within minutes of going into the back. He was awake right away after surgery and hysterical until he saw me. Once I nursed him and calmed him down he was much better. He was sleepy and very relaxed through his first nap and then was back to himself mainly after the nap. We stayed in and watched tv, read books and just rocked all day. Good luck, it was definitely way worse for me than it was for him.
  • We actually just got home from having DS's tongue clipped this morning. they gave him some medicine before hand to relax, then took him back and put him under. he was awake within 20 min. He seems to still be a little grogy, but eating and acting like his old happy self.

  • DS had surgery at 9 months.  He handled the morning better than I did, went with the doctor's no problems.  He came out wailing his head off, I nursed and he calmed right down. He took a long nap, then was his usual happy self!
  • DS has had multiple surgeries in varying degrees and numerous procedure requiring anesthesia.  He has always handled the anesthesia well.  Most of his surgeries I wasn't allowed to be with him when they took him but one time I was there when they put him under.  They let me hold him as his body went limp.  It was awful, I walked out of the room bawling my eyes out.  After the surgeries where they didn't keep him sedated for days, he would wake up cranky and usually just need a drink to get him back to normal.  After a while he usually falls asleep and naps for a while.  For the quick ones he is usually back to himself after taking a long nap.  Best of luck to you and your LO.
