Toddlers : Blanket in crib, should I worry?

Bennett didn't have a single thing in his crib until this past summer.  Not because I was worried about it, but because he's never slept well and things in his crib just gave him another reason to NOT sleep!  His g-gma gave him a very light blanket and he instantly loved sleeping with it.  It's probably a tiny bit thicker than a cotton fitted sheet.  It was perfect for the summer because he had to have it, but it never made him too hot.

Well lately we've had some STTN issues (that are killing me, btw!).  When he gets mad he either throws his blanket out of his crib, which I could care less about, or tries to cover himself up with it.  This involves him putting it over his head simply because he can't figure out how to really cover himself up yet.  Or just snuggling it over his face.  I've seen him to it on many occasions as he likes to play "nigh-nigh" during the day.  And who knows, he might do it on his own when he does STTN.  We don't have a video monitor.

Over the weekend I went in and somehow with him being a super light sleeper and our creaky wood floors, managed to pull it off his face without waking him.  Last night I tried after a 4 AM fit and woke him up.  So my question is, at 2 years old should I really be concerned anymore about the whole suffocation thing?  I mean, I obviously don't want to make the effort and chance him waking up for no good reason!  But safety is most important even if I get less sleep.

  • I don't worry about it anymore. Bella moves around so much that the blanket is sure not to stay long, BUT I've never caught it around her face. She wraps her blanket around her neck like a noose at night :(

  • DD sleeps with a couple blankets as well and started around 2.

And we go through the whole no-STTN phases as well.

  • Dillon sleeps with the blanket pulled up over his head (he gets this from his mommy who does the same thing). He has done it since his lovey days and sleeps much better if I don't go to remove it. I'm not concerned.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • Jude has two blankets and two loveys and I don't worry about it.  He thrashes all over when he sleeps and often ends up all twisted up in the covers.  He's at the age that he can move the blankets if they get over his face or whatnot so I don't get too nervous about it.  Our upstairs is gets chilly since we live in a 100 year old house that has drafty spots so he does need his blankets some nights.

  • I wouldn't worry. At all.
  • My almost 2 year old sleeps with two blankets - 1 to cover him and one to snuggle with, a pillow, a sock monkey, a lovie, a glow worm and a cabbage patch.  I don't know how he can stand it, but he MUST have all of his items.  I usually go in before I go to bed and remove some of them.
