C-sections

For those who had a RCS

Did you ever think about doing a VBAC or went straight for a RCS and why. With DS he was breech so my CS was scheduled, this time around i kind of want to try a vaginal birth. The doctor told me that my pelvis is small and I will probably have a hard time delivering even if i try. Should I just go for the RCS?

Re: For those who had a RCS

  • I had a hard time deciding which route to go.  I went to my appointment at 37 weeks, I was going to try for a VBAC.  I started talking to the doctor about it, then she noticed my BP was up and I had protein in my urine, I was developing pre-e.  She said she would check me, if I had dilated, then we would try for a VBAC, if not, we'd do a RCS.  I was closed.  I am ok with the decision...although I do wonder if I could have still VBAC'd.

  • I was induced with DD, I stopped contracting despite pitocin, never progressed past 4cm and ended up with a c-section.

My OB said while she was doing the c-section that DD never would have fit (only 6lbs 3oz) and that paired with my "uncooperative" uterus, that I shouldn't even bother to attempt a VBAC.

I've had 2 repeat c-sections since and I don't regret it one bit. Even if I had been given the option to VBAC I don't think I would have. I didn't want to try and end up with a c-section anyway. I felt my recoveries were easier with my scheduled c-sections than after laboring for 13 hours then having a c-section.

  • I considered a VBAC but after speaking to my dr. I decided to have a RCS. I reached this decision because of the risks associated with VBACs and my history of large babies. DD was 8 lbs 9 oz, and LO ended up being 9lbs 6 oz. Also, we live far away from both sides of the family so with a RCS we could plan when the family could come so they could be here for the birth of LO. Scheduling the CS also allowed DH's job to be prepared for the time he'd be gone. My decision was both because of health risks and convience.
  • I went for the VBAC, I was in the same situation as you - DD1 was breech. I thought it would be easier recovery with a toddler at home.  My OB said she would let me go to 40 weeks and then I needed a RCS.  She wouldn't induce because of potential complications.

I was fine with that and she actually let me go until 40w3d and I wasn't dialated at all.  So it was a RCS and by then I was done being pregnant.  DD was 9lbs 5oz so I was glad we went the rcs route.  My biggest concern was that I would go into labor but end up with a rcs anyways.  I know they say that the body can birth a big baby but I think it all worked out for the best.

And recovery has been much easier this time, and it wasn't all that bad the first time around.

  • Nope. Medically I'm not a candidate for a VBAC so I didn't have a choice.

I have a classical incision (vertical on the inside) due to my uterus being too small at 28w4d to handle the common type of incision (horizontal on the inside) with Aidan. I have a greater risk of rupture so I have to deliver by 38w at the latest.

  • I went straight for a rcs with DS2. I had no desire for a VBAC due to my sister trying a VBAC and having a raptured uterus. It was the scariest thing not only for her, her dh but my whole family. We almost lost her and my niece. I know it's a small chance but there was no way I was trying out that chance for myself.

  • A VBAC wasn't an option with my second pregnancy due to the fact that they were only fifteen months apart. My Dr told me that they only will consider doing a VBAC if it is 22 months or further apart. With this baby; my Dr said he wants me to have a RCS due to the fact that the chance of a rupture is higher and the fact that each of my babies came out heavier and bigger than the last. 9lb1oz and then 9lb5oz.

  • I didn't decide I wanted the RCS until a few days before. DS1 was a failed induction. After DS1 I was diagnosed with a painful bladder disease and it was also discovered that some of my pelvic muscles are very weak and not all formed correctly. My OB didn't know for sure If I'd even be able to push correctly but was willing to let me try. In the end I decided to have the RCS. I was so dissapointed that I needed one with DS1 because my labor "failed". I knew there was a decent chance I'd end up with one again so I decided to chose one on my own terms.

  • I planned to have a vbac, until 38 weeks when any progress that had been made reversed, I went from being dilated, to being completely closed. I was too frustrated and for work reasons I took off of work at 38 weeks. At that point I scheduled my csection. If I would've gone into labor I would definitely have gone for the vbac, but no luck and now tomorrow I am having my csection.

  • I was never given the option... My OB practice does not allow VBAC at all, there is only one practice in the county that does and they quit doing OB as of the first of Jan 2012 so there u have it.

  • DS1 was breech and turned out to weigh 9lbs 13 ounces at 38w. DS2- I had considered it the entire time up until 4 wks before. I was going down the same path...I gained 55 pounds with DS1 and I was almost there with DS2. DH and I discussed the disappointment I would have of laboring and having a RCS anyways. Plus my OB from my first son said my pelvic bones didnt do the spreading needed to deliver a large baby. We went with the RCS the 2nd time and DS2 was 8lbs6 ounces....given 2 more weeks to bake he would have been another pound or so. This time around....I didnt even think twice since I have had 2. I didnt think it was an option to VBAC. Aparently I can but the risk is just too high. Plus, I want my tubes tied. The hospital I deliver at is catholic and will not do it unless you have a medical reason...my doc says having a csection gives you a shoe in for this. Otherwise DH would have to get snipped. We are going with the RCS. LONG STORY....Sorry!

  • I can't have a VBAC.  Sad  With my DD I was induced at 38 weeks b/c of Pregnancy induced hypertension and DD never "dropped", I never dialated past 2cm, and her heart rate dropped.   They did an emergency C-section and discovered that not only was she big (8 lbs two weeks early) but the cord was wrapped around her neck 3 times.  Worst of all they said my uterus was extremely thin -- as if I'd had multiple children before (I haven't!).   Because of the thin uterus I can't delivery VBAC.  I'm really bummed mainly because I want to feel labor again and I know I won't.  Sounds silly I guess but it just bums me out.

  • I had an unplanned c/s with DD1 and my OB for DD2 said that I was welcomed to try for a VBAC if I wanted to.  I opted to go for the RCS for a variety of reasons and was incredibly pleased with that decision.  My recovery was a lot easier and faster than expected, so it was simply a matter of reminding DD1 (who was 2 at the time) to be careful of my "owie".

  • I had an emergency c/s with DS after going into labor naturally at 41w2d.  He was stuck in my pelvis and I never dialated past 7cm.

This time around I wanted to try for a VBAC but as I have progressed I am already measuring large, like I did last time with DS.

I just had a Drs appt this morning and discussed with my Dr about plans for birth.  We agreed (along with DH) that we would schedule my c/s for 39 1/2 weeks but if I went into labor naturally prior to that date I could try for a VBAC.  I thought that was a good compromise since I really don't want to go late and I would like to have less of a chance of going into labor naturally only to have the baby be too big and end up with an emergency c/s again.
