Holiday Lights Venues- Callaway, Lake Lanier, or Stone Mountain

Hello Ladies!

I would like to take my family on an overnight trip to either Callaway, Lake Lanier or Stone Mountain for the lights/holiday shows. I have been to all of the aforementioned venues when it is not the holidays, but never during the holidays. Anybody recommend one over the other and why (my girls are 3 and 1, if that helps)? Thanks everyone!

Re: Holiday Lights Venues- Callaway, Lake Lanier, or Stone Mountain

  • I've never done Callaway, but we go to Stone Mountain just about every weekend.  We just love Stone Mountain in general, and live really close so we go all the time.  They have TONS of lights set up in the Crossroads area that you can walk around in.  They have Santa, Snow Mountain (costs extra) and lots of stuff to walk around and look at.  They also have a special Christmas train ride going on.  Pretty sure the Christmas stuff is only on weekends for awhile, so that's something to consider.  It also gets CRAZY busy and packed with people.  I'm pretty sure Lake Lanier is just fun to drive through for the most part, but they have LOTS more lights than Stone Mountain.  Just depends what you're looking for.

  • I've been to both Lake Lanier and Stone Mountain at Christmas. We plan to go to both this year.  The reason why I'm torn with what advice to give is, I'm not sure I'd stay the night at either place...  However, if that's something you want to do jsut because than that's fine too, I just don't think it's worth staying the night.  If you wanted to do something on both the day you arrive and the day after, then I definitely feel Stone Mountain has more to do to warrant an overnight stay.  Both places have lights and are really very festive and both are fun for the kids.  Stone Mountain has a lot more walking around, train rides, entertainment, shopping, 4D movie, the lift to the top of stone mountain, snowmountain, etc.  All those things cost money per person, adventure pass I think is about 35-40 per person for 3 and up, plus you have to pay 10 to park and snow mountain is extra (we've never done it so I can't comment whether its worth it).

Lake Lanier you are mainly in the car viewing the lights.  The way we do Lake Lanier is we get there early, while still light out and drive all the way to the end/back and get out at the "village" there is a mini carnival, petting zoo, pony rides, a store with tons of christmas ornaments, face painting, Santa Claus, a food "court" as such and a few tented areas where different entertainment perform.  There are also 2 big fire pits where you can roast marshmellow (bring your own!)  Then after we do all that, we get back in the car and drive out to the front and get back in line (it's crazy packed just be prepared) and ride through the 7 miles of lights and leave an go home.  This is $60 per car on weekend, $40 per car on weeknights...but everything at the "village" costs money too so pony rides, petting zoo, food, etc all cost extra.  I'm waiting for a half off depot or groupon to show up like we got last year, but so far I've not seen one!

I'm sure you'll have fun regardless of what you do!

  • soon2b3, I'm pretty sure I already saw the Lake Lanier Groupon in the last week or two, not sure if they will run it again?  I hope so, because I didn't get it either and now I wish I had!

Darn it!!!  We need a PSA announcement on here if there is another one, please TIA :-)

  • Thanks Ladies, especially the advice about not warranting an overnight stay. I really appreciate your insight!
  • We went to Lights of Life a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just thought I would mention it in case you might like it, too.

We went last weekend and it was fun.  If you on the weekend they have more to do- little train to ride, petting zoo, hot chocolate, Santa, etc.  It is not as big as the others but great for us since we live very close to there.  We are going to try Stone Mountain this year and I'm excited about it.  Everything the website shows looks great.
