Leapster Explorer or Leapster 2?

I don't usually post here but thought this would be a great place for my question! I have 5 and 3 year old boys. I want to get them one of these systems for Christmas but wasn't sure which one.Orignially I purchased Leapster 2 on Black Friday online because they were $25 each but then was told they sold out. I went ahead and got my son (5 year old) Leapster Explorer because the Leapster 2 has been sold out everywhere. Is there a big difference? I'm assuming the Leapster 2 must be cooler if you can't find it anywhere.

Also, can a 3 year old play with this? Orignially I was going to get him one because it was on such a good sale. For the orignial price of $65 though, I'm not sure if he is ready. Any experience? Thanks!

Re: Leapster Explorer or Leapster 2?

  • The Leapster 2 is the older version of the Explorer. The Explorer has a larger screen and much better graphics. Plus because the Explorer is newer, there are more games than for the Leapster 2. We have Explorers (I have 5.5y old twins) that we've had for about 2y. They didn't play much with then at 3.5y, but got into them around 4+. My one gripe is the little game cartridges. They are about $25/each (though you can get them for $20ish on sale) and my kids are forever losing them despite having cases for the handheld and games. My kids are really into them right now (they come in and out of favor) and play them quite a bit in the car - so I do think they are a good investment.

  • Thanks for your input! I wonder why the Leapster2 is sold out everywhere. I got the Explorer and I think my son will really love it. I'll feel out DS2 and if he seems to really like it I can think about it for his 4th birthday.
