Boppy vs other nursing pillows

Ok I know Boppys are all the rage and I have been wanting one for awhile, however I am a plus size girl and im wondering if this thing is even going to fit around me. Any plus sized mommas/mommas to be with boppys out there?

I have heard of my brest friend pillow and looks like its slightly larger but I love the look of the boppy and the fact that you can use them for tummy time etc. Help!!!! Which one should I get?

Re: Boppy vs other nursing pillows

  • I am plus sized as well, and I have the boppy.  It's a little snug at the moment, but it should work either way.  If it helps I usually wear about a size 20, so I guess if you are close to my size, it should work for you too.

  • I think that if there would be a problem with either one fitting it would be the my breast friend because you have to buckle it. After DD I was around a size 16 and both actually worked fine for me. I did prefer the boppy most of the time. However, that might change this time seeing how I could have to get up and down while nursing to help DD1 with things.

  • I used the Wal-Mart version with DD and will use it again this time.  It is a bit bigger than the Boppy and also a bit cheaper!  It isn't quite as firm as a Boppy but still works really well for tummy time, etc.  DD loved it as a positioner since she hated being flat on her back.  It was probably my most used item.  I don't know if I would have breastfed for as long without it.  It makes it relatively hands free and comfortable.  I am also larger and very chesty.  I found that using it more to one side and using the football hold worked best for me, and I didn't feel like I was smothering DD with my boobs. Hopefully this link will work.  The one I have is an older version, so different material, but I think that's it.

  • The lactation consultant at my hospital recommended my breast friend. I have the boppy so we will just see how that goes. I am not returning it.

  • My Breast Friend is WAY better than the Boppy for nursing.  I had the Boppy during my first pregnancy, then as soon as I went to a lactation consultant when DD was a couple of days old, she suggested a My Breast Friend, and I tried one on.  I bought one that day, and never used the Boppy for nursing again.

  • I loved the boppy for DD. but we never really used it for tummy time. just for nursing. If you are worried about comfort, you could just use a pillow . lots of women do.

  • I can't use a boppy for breastfeeding because I am having twins and you can't fit two babies on that thing at once, but I still got two boppies for the tummy time etc. If you can afford it, I vote for MBF and boppy- I have only heard good things about MBF, especially for larger figures, because it has more support and stays put once you get it on. The boppy though is really great for so many things... OK maybe get the boppy for now and see if you can try out a MBF somewhere after LO comes to compare the comfort for breastfeeding. If the boppy works out, then you've got that and you can stick with it. If you find that the MBF is much more comfortable, you still have plenty of uses for the boppy.

  • I agree that the Breastfriend is more snug because of the buckle, but I think it may be adjustable, I can't remember. I have both. I didn't find the Boppy helpful for nursing, but I loved it for tummy time or just helping DS hang out and lounge near me early on. The Breastfriend was way better for nursing, IMO.

  • My plus size friend told me that the boppy did not work for her. Based on other mama's recommendations I got the Luna Lullaby Bosom Buddy pillow. It's more of a 'v' shape and is supposedly very comfortable.

  • I'm an 18/20 and used the boppy with no problems, but I have to say, I stopped needing it after about a week.  It was just easier to prop my elbow up on the arm of the couch.  I didn't use the boppy again until DD was learning to sit up by herself.

  • I'm about an 18, the Boppy seemed to fit fine, but i had a big baby at 9lbs and found that just regular pillows, or even throw pillows from the couch were far more easily arranged to get things sorted out just right.

  • I got a boppy but when I went to see an LC she had a my brest friend and I liked it better so I bought one and only used that.

  • I would definitely go with the Boppy. It's the only pillow that is versatile - feeding, propping, tummy time, helping the babe sit up. And, it has a stretchy middle that is made to fit most waists, so you should be totally fine. Congrats!

  • Did not read all the other responses, so apologies if this is duplicative. I had both pillows for my first son.  Although I am not plus sized, I heard that the brestfriend is better for plus sized women.  That being said, I preferred my brestfriend anyway.  I never used the boppy for nursing once I tried it in the hospital, b/c the baby sinks into the curve of the pillow.  My brestfriend is flat, so it keeps the baby where you want him/her.  Highly recommend the pillow. I occassionally used the boppy to sit the baby in, but if I had to buy only one, it would DEFINITELY be my brestfriend if you are nursing.  It's great.
