Pronunciation for Luchas...

My friend had her son today and is waiting to fill out the birth certificate for until they go home (had c-section so she has a few days). They are naming him Lucas. He wants to spell it the conventional way so its easier to spell and lessen the chances of mispronuciation, however she wants to spell it different. She likes the spelling Luchas.  All the nurses and Drs pronouced it correctly except one who pronounced it Loo-chus.

 She is wanting some strangers' input.

 So if you see the name "Luchas" would you pronounce in Lucas?

    Even though I've studied Italian and know the ch makes a hard c sound, my instinct would be to pronounce it Loo-chus. This spelling immediately makes me think of the word "battles/struggles" in Spanish, or of Lucha Libre wrestlers. Sorry.

    But if your friend is okay with correcting people, I support using a traditional spelling.

    It looks like Loo-chuss or Loo-chass....and although most would probably assume it's just a made-up spelling of Lucas, it's just so unneccessary/ruining a great name--please tell her to go with Lucas, her way looks really unattractive and silly.

    I would definitely guess it was pronounced like Lucas but I hate that spelling.

    It looks like luck-us. Ew. She should listen to her husband and spell it Lucas.

    Tell her it still sounds the same no matter how it's spelled and to save the kid a little headache. I want to say it with a guttural ch sound, like Loughas- or Loogie. Not good at all.

    ETA: Or she should be prepared to correct everyone and teach him to correct everyone for the rest of his life.

    I agree with this.  We're naming our little boy Luke, so I clearly love the name...but the variant spelling doesn't make sense to me?  If she doesn't like Lucas, perhaps Lukas? That is a more common international version of the name, based on what I've read on the name...

    This is my neighbors name, she is a girl, and very crabby! :)

    I teach kindergarten and I would not call him Lucas at firwst glance.

    I would think Loo-chus, and my first thought was that it was someone trying to spell Lucius. Lucas never entered my head.

    I treat this like the word "Orchid". I KNOW it is pronounced like orkid, but I purposely pronounce it like orch-id...because I can. Same thing goes for "Salmon". 

    (Side note, I worked at Kinko's in college and these are/were popular paper colors, so I had the opportunity to mis-pronounce them on purpose A LOT)

    because I'm an a hole about random letters sometimes, I would pronounce it Luscious. Even though I would guess that it's Lucas.

    I'd call him Loo-shas just to be a jerk. Don't misspell your kid's name. It's mean.

    First thought: spanish for struggles

    Second thought: would be fun to pronounce hebrew/yiddish style, with the ch sound like in challah

    Third thought: is that supposed to be lucas? dear god, i hope not.
