2nd Trimester

very scared and not sure what to do...

I am 22 (almost 23) weeks pregnant and 22 years old. I have been having quite a few normal breast related symptoms since my 2nd tri started (tenderness, swollen, and just recently leaking colostrum). But tonight I felt a pea-sized (maybe a bit bigger) lump in my breast. I can't find anything that says that this is normal! The lump itself doesn't hurt but it is hard to get a good feel of it just because my breast is so tender and swollen. The only thing I can think of now is "cancer???" Has anyone heard of lumps being normal during pregnancy?? Please, any information would be greatly appreciated. I am so worried now and I don't know what to do.

  • I have heard some lumps can be normal. Cysts in your breasts as hormones change are pretty common. It would be a REALLY good idea to bring it up at your next appointment, but you probably don't need to make a special appointment just for that.

  • Lumps can be normal. I had lump during my first pregnancy. My doctor thought it was not big deal, but had it checked out anyway. All was fine. Try not to worry. Just mention next time you are in.
  • I would definitely talk with your doc... but my first thought was the many little lumps I got like that as my milk came in while breastfeeding.... Maybe you're milk glands are just swelling from creating the colostrum. not sure... sorry I couldn't be more help.

  • My thought is maybe a clogged milk duct? Stay calm (if at all possible) and get it checked out. Try to stay positive thought!

  • I would just mention it at your next appt and have the doctor look at it... with my first pregnancy my breasts got pretty "lumpy" haha, I don't know if it was milk ducts or cysts or what but my midwife said it was pretty normal because of all the hormone changes, they stayed this way while I was breastfeeding and the once I stopped and my hormones went back to normal they lumpy feeling went away.  Hopefully it's nothing!!

  • Don't jump to conclusions without talking to your doctor.

I get "fibrocystic" lumps in my breasts with my pms symptoms, and also have them during pregnancy.  I have been told repeatedly by doctors that they are normal.  So maybe you have that.  Or some other benign condition.  Definitely have your doctor check it out, but try not to freak in the meantime.  Cancer would be very unlikely.

  • I can totally relate. A few years ago after I had found a lump in my left breast. My Dr. sent me for a biopsy...which showed it to be begnin. She said it was a fibroid and it's common. I'm only 28, I was 25 I belive at the time so it's not like age is a factor. I went back for an ultrasound of the same breast a few months after I gave birth to my daughter bc the Dr. said it was still there. She said if I got pregnant again, that it can enlarge due to hormones. It still is something I try to monitor and I am going to bring it up again at my Dr. appt. on Fri.

    I hope this helps.

  • I don't know about anyone else, but sometimes when I drink caffeine, I get cysts. I have very fibrous breasts anyways, but I have found lumps due to having a soda or some coffee. Just an idea.

  • I found a lump in my breast when I was in college and went in for the doctor to assess.  I was sent for an u/s of my breast and it turned out to just be a milk duct (this was waaaayyy before either of my pregnancies).  Just wanted to share a positive story.  I agree with pp that you should bring it up with your doctor, but it could also very well be pregnancy/hormone related.  GL and keep us updated!
  • Whatever you do, do NOT google it. I have an inflamed hair follice under my arm. I googled it, and was convinced I had cancer, and was going to go septic and die from the toxins inside the lump. Truely. Call and get in with your doc. I bet it is related to hormone changes. And bravo to you for continuing to check youself and know your body. No one is a better advocate for you, than yourself.

  • hopefully it is normal, but the painless lumps are typically more dangerous than ones that hurt. although i have very fibrous breasts and the lumps i get dont hurt and they arent dangerous, so its hard to know, but a doctor can tell. another thing to figure out is if it is moveable or if it is stationary. if you can manipulate it and move it around with your fingers it is less likely that it is cancerous, the ones that are really stationary and immovable are more likely to be cancerous. i wouldnt stress to much but i thought i'd share some of the info i know about it.. hope i dont scare you, not my intent at all :(

  • I've been through a lump scare, too. Call your doctor tomorrow. I would not wait until the next appt. I'm not trying to scare you...finding out it's a fluid filled cyst or something if probably the direction you are headed in. They can perform a breast ultrasound on on you , so you don't have to worry about exposing your baby to radiation from a mammogram or breast MRI. Best wishes to you.

    This.

I have had more mammograms and breast u/s than I can shake a stick at, and they always came back normal. A lump is scary, but most of the time, it's going to be ok. Monitor the size and feel of the lump until you can see your doctor--s/he will ask you if there have been any changes, and also, it may go away before then.

Also, watch yourself for signs of mastitis (you feel feverish, the breast is hot in the lump area, there are red streaks on your breast skin, the lump starts to hurt). If you have a clogged duct, mastitis is a real possibility. It's no fun at all, and it can give you a fever. Considering everything, I would be more worried about this than about cancer. It is easily treated, but the sooner you catch it, the better since fever is not good for baby.

This exactly. I found a lump in my first pregnancy, told my Dr and he thought it was a lymph node. We watched it for growth and nothing changed through the rest of the pregnancy. It went away after pregnancy and actually resurfaced with this second pregnancy. Of course, talk with your Dr about it at your next visit, but new lumps can be normal. Good luck!

  • My breasts were all sorts of lumpy at the beginning of my pregnancy. They did go down a bit around week 10 but my doctor told me that they would probably get that way again on and off throughout my pregnancy. She chalked it up to hormones. She did say that if I say any visual changes, the lump protruding from my breast, red and swollen only at the lump site, or black and blue marks, to call her because then it may have developed into something more like a blocked milk duct.
  • Please go get it checked! A good friend of mine was told that she had a clogged milk gland during her pregnancy. She never had it checked out.. after she gave birth to her beautiful baby boy she found out it was cancer and it had spread all through her body. She passed away when her son was only 6 months old... I know this is morbid and scary but please please please get it checked out! It breaks my heart that my friend is gone and breaks my heart thinking it could happen to anyone else!!
  • I have had a pea sized lump in my breast for at least 3 years now.  It was discovered when I was 25 or 26, and I am now 29.  They know it's not a cyst because it's not fluid filled.  She said it's probably something called a fibroadenoma, which are benign lumps affecting women of child-bearing age.

  • When I was in my first trimester, My OB found a small lump on my one breast that was painful!. She had me get an ultrasound of it done, and it turned out to be just a cysts! Cysts can come and go with hormone changes. As for cancer they say when you find a lump it usually isn't painful. So my best bet is that your ok, But I would diffently tell your OB about it, and maybe it an ultrasound just to make sure it's nothing!
  • I had the same thing-- a pea sized lump, and I made my doctor feel it a few appointments ago.  He said it was completely normal-- just a lymphnode that serves no purpose-- I forget the exact thing he called it.  He assured me it was nothing to worry about.
