omg horrible ear pain, sore throat & huge lymph nodes

I've had a sore throat for a week and 2 days. I had my dr look at it on friday and he said it looked good.  But then waking up on Sunday morning my lymph nodes were definiely swollen and have made my whole neck increddibly sore.  My ears hurt too, even though I'm not really having any congestion to cause pressure against them.

So during my 5th wake-up to pee this morning DD decided to crawl into bed with us.  And my ear pain was so severe that I couldn't go back to sleep!  The right is much worse than the left and no position was relieving any of the pain.

2 weeks ago exactly DD came down with strep and an ear infection that she was treated with antibiotics.  So when I mentioned this to my dr on friday he was unimpressed, saying it was too long for me to have gotten strep from her if my throat wasn't showing symptoms at that point.  And I know ear infections aren't contagious.  OMG my ears hurt so bad!!  So I eventually left DD and DH in bed and came down to the couch since I was absolutely not going back to sleep with this crazy ear pain.

I took some Tylenol, Sudafed and squirted some Hydrogen Peroxide in my ears (an idea from a thread further down about plugged ears) in desperation to get some sort of relief.  Anyone else with suggestions? I don't really want to go in for an extra doc appt since i have one on thurs morning.

  • I have no idea. Ive had a horrible cold for almost a week, and a couple days ago developed a slight cough, and as of yesterday have been getting ear aches whenever I lay on either side thanks to draining.

So, I called my doc. I will let him fix it lol.

  • All of those symptoms sound like what I get when I have strep.  It sounds so miserable, it might be worth seeing the dr again!  Antibiotics will clear up those ear infections quick, even if you don't need them for your throat.

My trick to help ear infections was to put a heating pad or hot water bottle on my ears.  They also make some ear drops that are supposed to help with pain that you can get at Walmart or Walgreens... I've tried them but in my feverish miserable state I can't remember if they did anything.

Another thought - do they have the "fast-care" type clinics near you? I know by me they have clinics with N.P.'s at places like certain Walgreens, Shopko's, and a few in the malls that are run by the local hospitals.  They can deal with stuff like strep, ear infections, sinus infections, and prescribe antibiotics. I've always had luck with them, they are cheap and quick.  Maybe something to look into so you're not feeling so icky until thursday?

Hope you feel better very very soon!!!

  • When I was little, my grandma would put a cotton ball dipped in pretty warm olive oil in my ears and it helped a lot with the pain!

Are the lymph nodes that are right behind your ear swollen?  That caused some serious ear pain last year and had to get IV antibiotics because nothing else worked.  That sure did though!!

    Get better soon :)

HORRIBLY swollen!  I went into an Express Care clinic to avoid going to the OBs (even though they're run through the same place and all my medical files are acessible by both) and when she felt my neck she pretty much pulled her hands back right away and said, "oh yeah those are quite puffy".  She kept her distance pretty far from me the rest of the visit :) obvious she didn't want to get sick, too!
