TMI, Confused, help pls. thank you in advance.

I'm 38 weeks 5 days, last dr. visit I was dialated to 2cm, and 50% effaced. So all last night I couldn't sleep, around 3am I started having back contractions, it was really painful. My contractions were about every 4-5 minutes, called the dr they had me go into hospital, got there about 7am this morning, well they said my contractions are every 3-5 minutes, but I wasn't progressing.. Yet, it was a nurse who checked me, not my dr. and she said that I was 1 dialated, and I'm not trying to be rude but she really seemed like an airhead. You can't go backwards when you start dialating. I've had 3 drs check over past few weeks and they all said dialated to 2cm. Anyways.. I never saw a dr. or my dr. (she was out today) when I was at the hospital. They ended up sending me home because I refused pain meds at the time, and I wasn't progressing. Well things have not let up, I have massive pressure in my pelvic area, feels like everythings going to fall out. Also, about an hour ago my Mucus plug fell out the whole thing. For those of you who've been in labor before, about how long did you have w/the mucus plug falling out, and also I've already had the "Bloody show" earlier today. I wish my dr was in today, I have an appt. tomorrow morning w/her, but I'm worried I will wait too long at home, and it's about 45 min. to get to the hospital.

  • Sounds like your body is definitely gearing up for or in labor! Congrats!

Honestly, you'll know when you're progressing. Once you get into active labor and have to work/concentrate through each contraction, you will know it's the real deal. And if you make it through active labor and into transition, you'll recognize the signs for that as well (feeling like you can't do this anymore, whatever "worked" for you during active labor isn't working anymore, contractions are right on top of each other, etc).

Have you tried taking a warm bath, drinking a glass of wine, and resting? That's probably what I'd do, until I was pretty sure that I had progressed enough to not get sent home again. If the hospital is that far away, you want to be sure before you go in.

  • Dilation, while not subject to change, can be measured about 1cm different between different people depending on how big their fingers are. So it's probably not that youre shrinking, but that the nurse measures slightly differently. Just assume youre still 2.

As far as the MP goes, I lost mine 3 weeks ago and still havent gone in to active labor:( But I think I lost mine due to an internal exam, though I am 2cm and 75%. But still no baby yet. But it sounds like you're in labor. Id wait to go back when your contrax are getting REALLY painful though. Maybe take a bath to see if they stop on the chance that it's false labor. True labor wont stop with a bath but false labor usually does. Or try walking a lot with your H to see if you can get things going better. Most labors progress fairly slow so I wouldnt be TOO worried about going in too quickly unless your in pretty intense pain. Though if you start to feel nauseous or poopy go ASAP! you could be close to transition at that point.

  • When I was having REALLY slow early labor I realized my two options were to 1) try and kick things into gear-- not sure what the weather is like where you are but go power walking for a little bit or go to the mall in the morning and walk around a whole bunch, do lunges up and down the stairs/just walk up and down the steps a bunch, try some pelvic tilts, nipple stimulation (I just put my pump on for about 10 mins very low suction and for me it definitely got my contractions more consistent), rock on the labor ball, etc. OR

    2) try and get some rest/relax-- this is what actually got my labor going, the above mentioned stuff would get my contractions harder and more consistent but they spaced out once I stopped doing whatever labor activity I was doing. I was convinced I was never going to have the baby and resigned myself to trying to relax and rest so that when it was the real deal I was good to go. I took a really hot bath, drank half a glass of wine and just tried to meditate and zone out. Once I got in the bath I thought that my labor had completely stopped because my back pain subsided, I didnt have a single contraction the entire 30 mins I was in the tub, etc. But as soon as I stood up to get out of the tub I had a contraction that rocked my world and my labor started from that point forward and moved pretty quickly. A nice tip if you dont have a great tub for soaking is to bring a full sized bath towel in the tub with you to get wet and lay over your chest and belly to help keep you warm and relaxed and also cover up the over-flow valve thingy so you can fill your tub up enough to really submerge and relax.

I wouldnt worry about things going too fast because even with fast labors you generally have at least an hour or two. From the first hard contraction I had when getting out of the tub I had 4 hours till my baby was born which was still fast considering I was at my parents house using their tub and they live 45 mins away from me. So I had the hard contractions at their house, had my sister drive me the 45 mins home. Was at home long enough (5-10mins) for DH to shower and me to realize we needed to hurry and get our butts to the hospital. Transitioned in the car on the 20 min drive to the hospital and dilated to a 10 and started pushing within 30 mins or so of getting to the hospital.

ETA: I was 2-3cm and 80% effaced the morning I had my DD. So I tried all the above tricks throughout the day and progressed pretty well.
