so what photoshop do i want?

I'm wanting to get PS, I think PSE?  Somebody help me figure out what I want, please!  I want to be able to get more creative with editing my photos, use some of the cool actions/presets I'm seeing, etc.  I've been looking at it on Amazon and have no idea which one is right/best for me.  So....HALP!

(I'm on a MacBook, if that matters, but I don't think it does?)

Re: so what photoshop do i want?

  • PSE is not set up for actions (or at least it wasn't the last time I looked at it 5+ years ago).

I'd go for at least CS4.  If you or any one in your house is a student, you can get a pretty good discount on PS.

    How cute is your siggy?!

    Maybe I'm confused - this says PSE 6, 7, 8, 9 .... or no?  I might be missing something.  Wink  https://www.florabellacollection.com/florabella-bw-photoshop-actions.html

    Thank you!

Here is a chart to compare full versions of PS.

    Here is one for elements.

Way back when I was using elements running actions wasn't really running an action, it was done as different layers and was a lot more work.  Granted, that was a long time ago so that could have very likely changed.  The charts above should help and give you an idea of what each version does.  When it comes to PS, I'm of the opinion it's better to buy above your skill level of use so you can grow in to it without the expense of upgrading.

  • No problem.  Also wanted to add that I have those actions and really love them.  They are worth it.

That's GREAT to know!  I've been lusting over those for weeks now.

  • FYI: they do make actions for PSE9 (which is the most current version).  There aren't a TON out there like for CS5 (full Photoshop) but they are there.  I know that The CoffeeShopBlog has a bunch and they work for PSE9.  MCP Actions has some, too, but you have to pay for those.

I'm currently using Lightroom (LR3) and PSE9 and it has been a great combo for me.  So far I haven't found any limitations in PSE9 that are holding me back (since I'm not full-on-crazy-pants editing my pictures) and I've been pretty happy with what I've got.

You can download a free 30-day trial from Adobe.  I would definitely recommend doing that so you can play around with it and make sure there isn't something in there that you're missing.

  • if i wanted to quickly and nicely edit family pictures and really make them stand out and have some good polish- i'd get lightroom.

if i wanted to make graphic design pieces (layout cards etc) and spend lots and lots of time learning a new tool to understand and properly use it to give my family's images extra polish- i'd get photoshop.

i rarely if ever pull my personal images into photoshop, but it is an amazing and fun tool that i obv use daily for client work.  and lightroom may not have actions but it does have nice presets :)
