Grandma nickname drama

Re-posted from 3rd Trimester:

Hi ladies,

My husband's parents are divorced and both remarried. Both mother-in-law and step mother-in-law want to be called Nana. Step mother-in-law has a grand-daughter who already calls her Nana. Mother-in-law wants to be called Nana because her brother called her Nan as a childhood nickname.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to handle this? I am thinking I might suggest that Mother-in-law go by Nan instead of Nana, but I still think that might be confusing for LO.

 TIA!

Re: Grandma nickname drama

  • Could you do Nana ______ for both of them?  Like last name or first name or something?  So Nana Smith and Nana Brown or Nana Barb and Nana Rose?

  • I called both of my grandmothers the same thing growing up and when I needed to tell them apart in conversation I just used their last name.  I know it may not be ideal with the step-mother involved but I would just let them both be Nana.

  • Honestly, I don't understand why some grandmothers throw a fit over what their grandchildren call them.  It's more special if the grandchild comes up with a unique name for them anyway.  It's how my grandmother came to be called Marmar because my older cousin couldn't say Grandma.

  • Maybe one could be Nanny? My mom is Nana to all the grandkids but they call her Nanny sometimes. It's cute! :)

  • My Grandmother's were both "Granny" and it wasn't an issue. We used their first names to differentiate between them. Or in the case of my little sister is was "Big Granny" and "Little Granny". lol

  • MIL wants to be called "TeTe" like her mom was.  DH is opposed to this but doesn't have the guts to tell her.  I laugh because growing up that's what we called pee in my family :P

Oy, I just know that if LO starts calling my MIL "Big Granny" that is not going to go over well for me.

  • This is how it is done in my extended family:

Nana Leah - my mom's mom

    Nana Julie - SIL's mom

Then some of my cousins kids have started with Noni (for one grandma) and Nannie (for the other grandma)...but everyone just generally turns their head to see who is wanting who's attention.

  • My DD calls my mom Nanny.  Maybe you could use that for one of them.  I also like the previous poster's suggestion of Nana first name.

My DD calls my step-dad Pop-Pop as well as my grandpa and it has never been a problem.  Traditionally both sets of grandparents are called "grandma and grandpa" so I don't see a problem with them sharing a "name".

  • I don't have this problem since my mom decided she wants to be called "Lollipop Sparkle" lol. She is joking but I'm thinking about trying to get baby to call her that for the fun of it =D
