Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Flat Head?

I went to se babies doctor yesterday and she mentioned that babies left side of her head is a little flatter than her right. I had noticed it before so I started rotating her head as much as i can but baby always goes back to her left side. She mentioned having to see a specialist if it doesn't improve by the time she is 4 months. I am super nervous because I don't want baby to wear a helmet.. has this happened to anyone?

Re: Flat Head?

  • I'm in the same boat. Noticed it at three weeks. I would demand to see a specialist NOW! We did and got lots of positioning tips and they helped us enroll in physical therapy. Lo might have the flatness due to tortocollis this is especially true if flatter on one side than the other. After one month so far we have decreased the flatness from 11 mm to 6. If it gets below six we won't need a helmet!

See the specialist now while baby's head is still very soft because they told us by six months not much will help and helmets become one of the only solutions.

  • WOW that's great that your little one is getting better. I will call to find out about a specialist. Baby is two month and 1 week do you think it's ok to start now? They did tell us that we had until she was 6 months to fix the problem if it wasn't fixed than she will need a helmet..I'm sooooo worried about his.

  • Fit is definitely ok to start now. It is scary and stressful to go through especially when they said it can cause distortion of the face ahhh I freaked out when they said that! But they will probably tell you that I'd you start now and are proactive it can get better! The thought of my lo having to wear a sweaty helmet with all her pretty hair scares me and they have to wear it 23 hrs a day! MSG me if you ever need to talk or need suggestions I'm sure your lo will do great!

  • We also discussed this with our pediatrican. We have a little flat spot on the babies head. He suggested having her on her belly when she's awake so it doesn't get worse ... but she's awake all day long (takes short cat naps during day). I couldn't possibly have her on her belly for that long!
  • I use the boppy noggin nest and I think it has really helped.
