VBAC

Intro and questions

Hi. I was on the bump during my pregnancy with DD and then after kind of drifted in and out. Anyway, I ended up with a c/s because I had to be induced at 38 weeks due to pre/pre-e (my bp was just below the pre-e level but I was having daily headaches that were getting progressively worse and tylenol stopped being effective). After being induced I went into labor just fine and was at 9 centimeters but then progress stalled and the dr realized DD was sunnyside up and stuck under my pubic bone. They tried turning her for about an hour. Finally they decided they needed to do the c/s for my health and DD's.

DH and I will be discussing ttc next month and I am really nervous about the issues I had at the end of my 1st pregnancy. Things with my bp started going down hill at 36 weeks but didn't start tanking until 37 weeks. I spoke with my dr after DD was born about a VBAC and he was really against it but didn't really tell me why. What makes someone a good candidate for a VBAC? I am also concerned that I will end up being induced again and if I have to deliver under simiar circumstances again, if the baby is sunnyside up I would rather just do a c/s because my 1st experience was so difficult with her getting stuck. Finally, (and this isn't really on topic but...) how closely will they monitor me in the last trimester after the issues in my last pregnancy?

Thanks!

  • Welcome! These are some good links about VBAC:

If you're serious about VBAC, then it sounds like you should probably find a new provider, or at least talk to other OB/MW and get their take on your daughter's birth. How supportive your provider is definitely has a lot to do with VBAC success.

I wasn't induced with my first son, but he was posterior/sunny-side up also, which is why I ended up with a c-section (I pushed for hours and hours, and he never came out). There's a decent amount of women on here who've also had posterior/mispositioned babies the first time around.

Most of the time, VBACs aren't induced (though MAPrincess was with her VBAC), but it does happen once in awhile, just depends on the practice.

I have no experience with pre-e, but hopefully someone else can chime in here. You also might want to ask this on the trimester boards, or even the high-risk pregnancy board maybe? I think the chances of having pre-e again are pretty good with subsequent pregnancies, but I could be wrong on that...

  • I would speak with your provider again and get more information about the practice, their VBAC statistics and why he didn't seem to be supportive.

I know a couple of Moms who had Pre-e with the first baby and not with the next.  So, that maybe you'll be one of those where it doesn't repeat itself.

You should also check out Spinningbabies.com.  They have exercises to work on positioning before labor begins.  It's a lot easier to move the baby before he/she engages and water breaks.

    Good luck with your research!

Thank you both for the info. I didn't know DD was sunny side up before I was 9cm and apparently either did the dr. It is definitely something I will b asking next time!  will check out the website too. In my conversation with the dr at my pre-op apt he just said if it was his wife he would want a c/s. I will defnitly be asking about their stats

  • This website has a list of really good questions to ask your current provider (or any provider you interview with): https://vbacfacts.com/2009/06/06/interviewing-care-providers-questions-to-ask/

I too was induced (only because I had reached 41 weeks, me, baby and placenta were perfectly healthy), reached 9cm without incident and then got "stuck" for 6 hours.  Then I got an epi and LO's heartrate started dropping with contractions and they pressured me into a c/s.  LO was sunny side up, with cord around his neck and his head kinked to the side, but now I know all of those things do not warrant a c/s and had I had a more experienced midwife/doctor, I think I could have had him vaginally.  I recently found out that hospital has a 40% c/s rate!  UGH!

For this pregnancy I've switched to a midwife with nearly 30 years experienced (she birthed me, my twin brother, and younger sister!), and I'm planning a home birth to avoid all the hospital rules/stresses.

I really enjoyed reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth.  I found it very inspiring and encouraging for natural births.  Also The VBAC Compannion is a good book if you decide VBAC is for you.  Good luck in whatever you decide!

  • I was induced with my VBAC baby and had a successful, pain med free VBAC.  I was actually induced for high blood pressure at just shy of 39 weeks.

I would look into getting a chiropractor who is Webster Certified- they can help with positioning.  I would also look into finding a care provider who is supportive of VBAC.  There are a lot of questions/things to look for on the ICAN website.
