Breast Feeding Books ~ Suggestions welcome

Hi Everyone!  I am a soon to be first time mom (20 weeks preggo) and want to breastfeed.   I want to start researching and learning about it now.

If anyone has suggestions for breast feeding books that are helpful for new moms to be please share.

Re: Breast Feeding Books ~ Suggestions welcome

  • Kellymom.com online is very helpful and a great resource.  Ina May Gaskin's breastfeeding book didn't come out until my daughter was older, but if I love her book on child birth, so I would think that her bf'ing book would be good too-

I got a pretty clinical book by Amy Spangler from the class I took at the hospital before DD was born. Does your hospital offer a class?  I found it well worth it and it was taught by a local board certified lactation consultant, so you got a lot of local contact info, etc. which is great if you really need help after the baby is born.

If you are on FB there are some great groups- Best for Babes, the Leaky B@@b, etc.

  • The Nursing Mother's Companion was a wonderful help to me, as was Kellymom.com.

  • I read the Ina May book and learned a lot, but took it with a grain of salt.  I did like it though.  LO and I still had issues at the beginning, but we stuck with it and are doing well now.

  • I've heard great things about "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding". I read "Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers." That and kellymom.com helped a lot.

  • The ladies above all recommended some great books.

I also recommend taking a class at the hospital, meeting with a LC, and going to a support group in your area.

  • I love Great Expectations: The Essential Guide to Breastfeeding.  I also have The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, but I like the first book a lot better.

Kellymom.com is also a great resource you should bookmark

  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions!  Kellymom.com looks like a great place and I will take a look at all of the books you have suggested.

     I appreciate it :)!!!!

  • Chiming in late, I have and like "The Womanly art of Breastfeeding" and I also like kellymom. Find a La leche group and go to it BEFORE you give birth, that way you know someone you can call if you have problems. Also, find an LC consultant. St. Agnes hospital has a nursing mom's group that meets on Tuesdays and an LC is available to help you FOR FREE.

ETA: You don't need to give birth at St. Agnes to take advantage of this.

I love these facebook groups! It was so helpful to read about other women's experiences and many knowledgable people replied. I liked to read on my iPhone while breastfeeding. Good luck!

"Breastfeeding Made Simple".   This is the best I've found, it was given to me by someone who had REALLY great successful with BF and my mom who was an L&D nurse read it after me and agreed it was an excellent resource!  The authors take the time to repeat information throughout the book so you really feel like you have an idea about what is needed and what to do and what to expect with only reading it once.
