Success after IF

sperm experts come in

I can't believe I just typed that...

Anyway, in a strange series of events I ended up having an unmedicated IUI today. My husband had a good sample with a ToMo of 17. But the forward moving and fast forward moving numbers were low. They said they like to see >50, and his were like 12 and 16 (or something in that range).

Is this a big deal? Or does it all get washed out in the end with an IUI? (No pun intended.)

note: we do not have MFI as part of our Dx, but my husband has tested with low testosterone and has been on supplements in the past for that issue.

TIA!

Re: sperm experts come in

  • I'm not an expert, but our IF issue is MFI, so I know a little bit about sperm, I guess.

From what we were told, some sperm swim in circles, some swim straight and some don't swim at all.  That's why they're looking for forward progression.  Did they mention any other issues with his sperm besides the progression?  Do you know if they did an SA according to Strict Kruger or WHO criteria?

In our case, MH's WHO SA came back normal.  It was his Strict Kruger SA that showed 0% morphology.  The criteria is quite different apparently.

CJ, he hasn't repeated his SA yet. But he'll have to before we can do another IVF. This was just his post-wash count from the IUI.

As it would seem, he had great motility but (as the tech told me) most of his sperm swim in circles. And I'm sorry but being told that made me laugh out loud. I just am sometimes surprised at the conversations I have as a result of TTC.

Anyway, nothing else was mentioned. Just the less than stellar forward motion numbers. Although his counts they said were excellent. I guess they normally like to see 10 million and he was 17.

That's lots of sperm swimming in a circle. Ayayayay.

  • I am no expert, but GL! that would be amazing!

Well, in any case, that would be awesome if you got pregnant this cycle!  I'm excited for you again!  :)
