OB switch-anyone done this

I have a new OB I'm not keen on and moreover, I just had my tour of L&D and this is not the place I want to be. In trying to get a new appointment, the practice I was referred to won't make me an appointment until my records are review and an OB "approves" a transfer. Is this standard? I'm really upset about receiving the care I have thus far and just am not sure this second practice is right. I feel like I'm beinged the right to evaluate them first and then opt to change. Am I being sensitive? Anyone done this later in pregnancy. I'm 20 weeks which seems like it's not all that far along to do this but the second office made me feel like I was crazy to be doing this.

  • I've never heard of a new practice having to "approve" a transfer. I've only heard of an office either accepting new patients at that time, or not .... not some patients over others!

My best advice is to follow your instincts. If you don't like your current OB and hospital, do whatever it takes to find somewhere that you are happy with. You do not want to be worrying about where you are and who is caring for you when you are giving birth.

I switched away from my OB practice at 30 weeks. They had been my practice for my first son's birth, and although I really disliked a few OBs there, I tried to explain it away and tell myself that I would just hope to have one I liked on call at the time of my 2nd son's birth. Then when they did a bait and switch on me around 30 weeks about not supporting my VBAC anymore, enough was enough.

I interviewed a few other practitioners and made sure I would be somewhere I was confident and comfortable for my birth, with practitioners that I would not feel were undermining me. 20 weeks is definitely not too late to switch!

    Good luck!!

  • Like PP said, follow your gut. I switched practices at 36 weeks! I had a bad feeling about my doctor the whole time and should have done it sooner. All I did was request a copy of my records from bad OB and deliver them to the new practice with my first appt. When I met with the new doctor, he wanted to know why I was switching, but only because he wanted to make sure it wasn't for some crazy reason like I wanted to give birth on a rocket ship or somesuch non sense. I have never heard of having to have your current OB "approve" the switch.

  • I switched at 32 weeks with DS. My new OB did want to know why I was switching before he would approve the switch, but he didn't require a review of my records. He did want my records ASAP, but my reasons for switching were related to my former doctor not telling me about complications, so I think his desire for yhem was valid, particularly considreing how far along I was.

  • I switched Ob's when I was pregnant with my DS.  It was around 20 weeks.  We toured the hospital and decided we wanted to go somewhere else.  It took me a while to find someone.  Several practices weren't accepting new patients or wouldn't accept me at that point in my pregnancy.  I had to get my records transferred too.

  • I switched at 25ish weeks during my last pregnancy.  It was the best decision for us, and I'm so glad we did.  I agree, do whatever you can to hightail it out of there and find another doctor.  Ask around for OB recommendations instead of being referred by the other practice, if possible.  The new doc should be able to request your files and your previous doc, by law, has to send them in a timely manner.  Good luck, and don't worry...women do this all the time when something just doesn't feel right.  It's our instinct.
  • Thanks. My concern is that this second practice was highly recommended by a few neighbors & colleagues. I get needing to perhaps review my file but why not with me at an appointment. Reviewing it without me being an "accepted" patient feels a little intrusive. I feel like its a medical resume and they could reject me-sounds silly probably but I'm just not comfortable with any of my options right now.
