January 2011 Moms

I'm nervous about switching to milk.

Basically LO is still having 4 8oz bottles of formula a day. She has a fruit puree after her morning bottle, and for dinner I have been giving her small mashed portions of what we had. Like last night she had chicken and peas.  If I switch to cows milk in about a month, I'm going to have to plan her meals a little btter and be dilligent to make sure she is getting everything she needs.

Maybe this sounds stupid. I guess I am relying on the formula too much, and I am in denial that she is not really a baby anymore.

To add a question to this, are you already feeding full meals, or are you still doing mostly formula/ BM?

Re: I'm nervous about switching to milk.

  • We're still mostly doing formula. At one point we were up to 3 solid meals a day, but somehow regressed. I feel like I'm cheating her out of nutrients and vitamins by not giving formula.

I hope to switch the WCM soon as Similac is friggen expensive and Target is just too far from our new place. At that point I think I will have to actually sit down and make a weekly meal plan and buy things specifically to give to her. We eat crap, so it's hard to share.

This is me too. Good idea about the weekly meal plan. Maybe I will do that too.

  • Depends on the day. Yesterday Jay ate a lot of people food and had 2 six oz bottles. Today he has had two bottles already and hardly any people food. But we were out all morning running around. I know i need to keep consistant.

I am nervous about switching to cows milk more because it's whole milk than because I have to make sure he eats enough food.

Everytime we give him whole milk he gets red rash like spots on his face. It makes me think maybe he is allergic. Going to talk to the pedi about it in Jan.

Also... If you are nervous you could try the toddler formula or continue regular formula for a little past a year or eating better.

  • Right there with you ladies.  I am not starting to offer it until after her 1-year checkup and talking to the doc.  She isn't eating enough volume-wise and variety-wise for me to feel comfortable with her not having formula at this point.  I am trying to offer her more stuff, but some of the things we eat I don't feel are appropriate for her to try yet (either they aren't nutritionally sound enough, or not enough variety, ex: the nights we eat a frozen cheese pizza and call it dinner).  This really should be my wake-up call that we need to start planning ahead and eating healthier!!

This, or we are going to have to teach our babies how to do the 30 day shred. lol

That stinks about Jay getting a rash. Poor baby.  Yeah, good point..I could keep up the formula a bit until we get into a routine. The formula we use is not an insane price, but its still 20 bucks a can. I need to get my act together ;-)

  • I want to start cooking on Sundays and then having it all on hand and ready to go during the week.  We have a bad habit of not feeling like eating what we have though, so we will go out and get something takeout or just get a pizza.  It's not a habit we can afford to indulge in as much as we do either.

We do this all. the. time. I actually stopped buying chicken because it was getting thrown out so much.

I know, this happens to us. Practically every Saturday we get pizza. While its not expensive, that 60 bucks a month!

  • We have not begun to make the switch yet.  DS is still on formula.  He has 5 6oz bottles a day.  He has a morning meal and will eat whatever we are having for dinner with us.  Since we have started having him eat dinner with us we have been eating healthier - which is good.  He is not a fan of the sippy cup.  I don't plan on giving him any WCM until our 1 year appt with the pedi.  But, yeah, I am not looking forward to it.  I don't know what to send to the sitter with him, and I am worried that he is not going to get all the nutrients he needs.

  • Mine still thinks sippy = poison and pitches a b*tch fit whenever I give it to her.  But she has no problem drinking dirty bathwater.

I swear that meal planning is way easier than you think it is, though.

  • We just tried some milk yesterday and he chugged it like it was going out of style.  Cooper has some days where he won't finish a bottle and other days where he can't get enough (formula).  He still mostly eats purees and and some stuff I eat.  He is getting better at eating chunks of things.

  • I feed her full meals.  In fact I was convinced that M didn't like breakfast until my mom had her Sat morning.  She said she ate yogurt, toast, and some cereal, along with formula in a sippy.  I always gave her a bottle as soon as she woke up so now I'm starting to think it's not necessary.  I've got her down to 2 bottles a day right now, and she'll get formula in a sippy throughout the day.

I usually cook dinner and we'll have leftovers for lunch.  She's a good eater, and typically eats what we eat unless it's junk food then I'll give her some veggies instead.  The only thing I'm nervous about switching to milk is that I'll open a new can of formula and waste it!  So I have to time it right.  I'm actually thinking of starting the transition in the next week.

But does your baby eat bubbles? All the cool kids are doing it.

  • I still BF, but I do give him a sippy with WCM every now and then. He likes it..but he never drinks all that much. He does eat 3 meals a day and some snacks..but honestly his "meals" are pretty small. It does force you to meal plan and eat healthy..but that is a good thing..right?!  Last night I made him a stuffed baked potato with veggies and cheese...he loved it! It was totally easy too..and I made one for me and the hubby. We also do a lot of quesadillas (sometimes with meat and veggies) , bean and cheese burritos, soups, pastas with veggies, home made mac and cheese,  rotisserie chicken with veggies and mashed potatoes...He loves all of those and they are quick and easy to make.

  • We had the green light from the pedi to start transitioning to WCM at 11 months so we are doing it.  We are at 1/2 formula & 1/2 milk in the bottle.  Joshua loves his sippy but I only put water in it so far. I need to put the formula/milk mixture in at meal time to get him used to having that.

Joshua is a good eater.  He usually has a couple of mini pancakes and a cup of yogurt for breakfast, some finger foods for morning snack, I've been trying to give him something other than baby food for lunch - the other day I gave him some chicken off my salad at Panera, some of my bread and shared my broccoli cheese soup with him.  For supper we sometimes give him some of what we are having other times it is baby food.  I got some reduced sodium turkey breast from the deli - had them slice it thick and give him some of that and some diced carrots and a couple of whole grain crackers for a lunch at home.

  • We started WCM at 11 months so he's been getting it for over a week now. He's doing well. I give it in the sippy during meals and snacks.

We consistently eat 3 meals per day - he's never liked baby food from the jars so I would make my own but he is now too cool for purees soooo it's annoying! He gets oatmeal with 1/2 to 3/4 banana for breakfast, 4 oz yogurt and pancake for lunch (most recently I made sweet potato pancakes from wholesomebabyfood.com to use up my sweet potato puree). For dinner he usually gets chicken, broccoli, carrots, apples. I make a huge batch then freeze so he always has something healthy even if I don't! However, I try to give him what I am eating if it's half-way decent for any meals I am having.

His snacks are puffs, yogurt melts or those cheese doodle things Gerber makes. He's a real finicky eater so I do get nervous that he's not getting enough but we do still nurse 4 or 5 times per day. I asked at the 2nd flu shot about how to know if he's eating enough and she said by his weight gain but that we'll discuss more at the 1y appointment. I don't want to cut out any nursing sessions until I have that appointment just to be on the safe side. He'll drink up to 3 oz of WCM per day only so far.

  • E gets about 4 7 ounce sippy cups a day.  We just got a can of formula last night and we're starting tomorrow to wean her slowly to WCM.  We were going to start at 11 months but we ran out yesterday so we figured a week wasn't going to hurt her.

She was refusing purees for awhile but now she eats 2 jars (or one huge 3rd foods jar), 3 times a day and finger foods of whatever I eat through the day if it's ok for her to eat.  If it's not ok for her to eat then she'll eat puffs or baby goldfish.  I swear all she does is eat!
