Success after IF

Sully needs a helmet

Sully has since birth really only wanted to turn his head to the right so he has been in physical therapy for a little over two months now for torticollis and he's made really good progress and is rarely on his back anymore except to sleep overnight (he sleeps on his tummy for naps and is supervised).  These things have really helped his head to not get any flatter but his head isn't rounding out and there are some issues with weird bone bumps and his ears being a little off.  So, it looks like we're headed for a DOC band.  I have a consultation scheduled for the 22nd.

I'm sad that he'll need the helmet but gosh, won't this little head look super cute in one?

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

Re: Sully needs a helmet

  • DS had one, and while it was a PITA I'm glad we did it.  I was just looking back at some pics and video of him with his helmet and it was so cute.

  • Omg, he is a punkin!  What a cutie :)  Our DS had pretty severe tort that did not fully resolve until he was almost walking.  It lead to a pretty bad flat spot.  We had great success w/ his helmet and I'm so glad we did it!  He also had a lot of facial asymmetry, with his eyes and ears.  I was too afraid of it not resolving on it's own, so we went ahead w/ the helmet.

I know you said you had a DOC band consult.  Are there any other orthotists in your area?  We went with Hangar (after consults w/ both places), and were very pleased with them.  They were also in-network for our insurance, and covered the helmet after an appeal.  Just wanted to throw in some other options, as DOC bands are often the only ones talked about.

GL!!  You won't regret it :)

  • He's going to look even more adorable! What a cutie pie :)
We're most likely headed to helmet-ville as well. DD's tort and head shape has greatly improved through PT but we're having a consultation in a couple of weeks because her eats are misaligned.

  • He will look adorable for sure!  My little Erik had to wear one for 3 months.  Looking back it wasn't really a big deal.   If you look at the newly released DOC band calendar, my guy is featured on the December 2011 page.  He is the baby in the blue snowsuit with snowflakes on his helmet :)

  • Well, I'm biased, but I think all babies look adorable in their helmets!  Andrew wore his for about 12 weeks - and it was really no big deal for him or us (besides the appointments for adjustments).

I'm glad the PT is helping his tort, and hope that the helmet helps his head shape and symmetry too - he really is adorable!

  • He is beyond cute.  And, yes, he will look adorable in a helmet!  Good luck with the consult.

One of my boys had severe tort (he wore a helmet and had some other very involved therapies/surgery).  Now, at 6 1/2yrs old, you'd never know it.  I'm so glad we did the helmet.
