Success after IF

IUI success with low AMH???

My stats:

AMH .19  Yes, that is point one nine, not a typo

FSH 7

Antral Follicle count of 6

42 yrs old. Two natural pregnancies at 38, both early miscarriages.  A healthy baby boy born when I ws forty.  We had our first fertility workup and the results aren't looking good. Can't really afford IVF but would like to try IUI with FSH injectables to see how I respond.  We have a second opinion with Dr. Schoolcraft at Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine at the end of October.

Re: IUI success with low AMH???

  • there was a thread recently about AMH's numbers, maybe that will help a lil? I would think that embryo quality is going to be your biggest mountain by far (and I say that b/c I'm AMA too)

best of luck to you... there's no better place than CCRM, I hear!

  • I have low amh, borderline fsh and a low antral follicle count. At the age of 39 I got pregnant from an IUI using high dose Femara (12.5 per day) with 150 of Follistim thrown in for 3 days after the Femara. So sometimes it can work.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Thanks for the replies.  I feel like I might be able to get pregnant with injectables but am worried about egg quality.  I'll read the thread about AMH, thanks for sharing it.

  • I'm so optimistic for you!  My AMH was .17, FSH 7, and antral follicle count 4.  My RE wasn't the least bit worried.  I was only 35, but other than that very similar to you.  I had just had 2 early losses that my RE attributed to poor egg quality, which is why he wanted to test my AMH (all cycles were with my RE).  I got pg with TI; my RE just saw no reason to consider anything else.  My baby is now 9 months old.  I'm happy to answer any questions, though you're in the best hands!  I wish you the very very best!!! :)

  • Wow, thanks. Our labs are very similar.  Does TI stand for tubal isemination?

  • It's just timed intercourse.  With no male factor, and especially after my c/ps which proved sperm and egg were meeting, he really had no reason to move us to IUI (and I asked plenty of times ;)).  We just had to deal with my egg quantity/quality (new issue, having had classic polycystic ovaries back in 2006), ovulation, and luteal phase (old issues).  My RE had helped me conceive my first daughter too, so we had a good starting point with treatment. :)  BEST WISHES!!!

  • Oh wow, TI. Whoever thought of just having sex!  May I ask how many follices you produced on the high dose FSH?

  • LOL!  I conceived my older daughter with Femara for purposes of extending my always miserable LP, though in all honesty I don't think that was key, rather the trigger and booster were.  I wanted to try for a couple cycles without Femara when TTC #2 since I was still BFing #1, though I still did the trigger and booster shot each cycle.  We planned to introduce Femara for purposes of creating multiple follicles due to poor egg quality after my c/ps, but for various reasons Femara kept getting pushed back, the latest cycle due to surgery.  That's the cycle I got pg.  Reading reports of a .17 AMH made me think I'd be lucky to create more than 3 or so follicles on injectibles, especially with an antral follicle count of 4, but it's the old saying of it takes just one.  Somehow I spit out a good one!  I was all set to start on 750mg of Femara daily a couple days later.  But my RE never even mentioned injectibles, believe it or not.  Again, he was very optimistic...not willing to waste time since my ovaries weren't looking like I was only 35, but optimistic.  And it took just one. :)  GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Thanks, your story gives me so much hope!  Since I have conceived three times with my husband i wonder if I should even try IUI or just focus my $ on the FSH drugs.  The RE I met with initially was very negative based on my numbers.  Yet he did tell me that I still ovulated on my last cycle.  Right now I'm doing yoga, acupuncture and will try au naturalle before meeting with another RE for a second opinion.

  • Hello,

I am new to the Bump. My situation is very similar to yours. I am 33 years old, medium to high FSH, and a low AMH.  My RE advised my only options were IVF or egg donor.  My husband and I drained our savings and decided to attempt IVF.  We started the full protocol on Dec. 7 and were just advised to day that our IVF will be canceled due to low follicle count. (2-3)  My estrogen is rising but very slowly.  I am completely mortified but my RE says that there is still a chance for IUI.  We are going to get revaluated on Thursday. The one follicle is measuring at 13 right now and he wants it at 16.  I am trying to stay positive.....after all it only takes one egg right?

Any thoughts, advice, or words of encouragement are welcome.
