psa: secure all your furniture--now!

I know that this is a total no-brainer for most of you, but I'm still shaking over this.

In Warner's room he has a tall book shelf that is anchored to the wall with one of those furniture straps. But we didn't anchor his dresser because it's low (we use it as his changing table) and seemed to have a good center of gravity and Warner has never had any interest in climbing on furniture anyway. Last night Warner was in his room (I was 10 feet down the hall in our room and DH was in the room right beside him) and Warner opened all the drawers to the dresser and must have leaned on it and it fell forward. The only reason that it didn't fall on top of him is that a rocking chair was in the way and took the weight of the dresser.

Warner wasn't hurt at all, but it did scare him and it terrified DH and me. I couldn't sleep last night, I kept waking up to go check on him (even though he was totally safe and sound asleep in his bed). All the "what if" scenarios kept playing in my head..."what if the chair wasn't there", "what if he'd been standing between the chair and the dresser", "what if DH and I hadn't been right there and the chair collapsed".  You guys, seriously, I am freaked out over what might have happened.

So, Warner is at preschool right now and the furniture strap thingy will be installed momentarily.

  • OMG. We have a low dresser that we use as a changing table, and I was just thinking to myself this morning that we probably don't need to anchor it. But clearly I'm wrong. I'll add another anchoring thing-y to my shopping list.

I'm so glad Warner is ok.

  • That is so scary.  I've caught DD trying to climb DS's dresser and I've told her how dangerous it was.  Knock on wood, she hasn't tried again.  I imagine Warner will never try again after that fright.
  • OMG so scary! one of my nightmares! I am so glad he's OK!

(and I always remember that episode of Desperate Housewives, where they explain what happened to the real Dylan, don't remember the name of her Mom,she was on for 1 or 2 seasons)

  • How scary!  I'm so glad everyone is ok!

We have a low dresser too and it's definitely easy to put off anchoring furniture for different "reasons."   It's easy to think I'm going overboard when I say to DH that we need to start anchoring furniture, and not just in DS's room but also the living room, but it's stories like this that remind me I'd rather be overly cautious than not cautious enough.

  • That's scary.  Thank you so much for posting.  It provided the kick in the butt I needed to finally order some furniture straps.  And just a few days before my Amazon prime runs out!
  • YIKES!  I'm glad he's ok.

This might make me rethink my "oh, T doesn't like to climb - I don't need to anchor the furniture" attitude...

One of the major "back when DH was a toddler" stories that my MIL tells is how he climed the dresser in his room and it fell on top of him but some how like in the cartoons he went inside one of the drawers as it landed and not a scratch on him.  Now part of me wonders if that really happened but the other part of me feels that as much as DS takes after DH we should be extra careful.

And then the week we put DS in his new toddler bed & we hadn't gotten around to strapping the dresser down yet one of the bumpies on here that is a teacher said an incident of a dresser falling on a toddler happened near her school.  The very next day we strapped it down.  So scary.
