April 2012 Moms

I thought I had a girls name picked...

But Lily is so dang popular!!! I'm pretty sure I want to stick with L, but I have no idea what... if it's a boy, I know it'll be Lyle - and since everyone is convinced I'm having a boy, I need to make sure to have a girls name ready because I know babies love to prove all the old wives tales wrong!  Any suggestions?

  • My BFF is Liliana and I never had heard that before until her.  That is my fave of the L names.  Good luck.

  • I say stick with what you love.  It doesn't bother me if a name is popular, it wouldn't stop me from naming my baby the name I wanted.  I like Lily, it's very pretty.  Go with your gut!
  • Lucy or Laney or Lauren

  • I personally love Lily.  Would the full name be Lillian?  Lilith or Liliana could be an acceptable full name for Lily too.

Some other L names: Lindsey, Layla, Lacey, Laken, Lana, Larissa, Lauren, Laurel, Laura, Leah, Leanne, Lisa, Liz, Loganne, Lucy

  • We are going with Lillian which jumped to #41 on the list, so we were glad about that. I like Lauren, Laurel, Lucy, Lilliana for other L names.

Also love Lila and Layla. But I agree if you love Lily, I say use it.

  • My big fear is that Lily will be the "Jennifer" of now... does anyone think this is a possibility?  My sister, sister in law, best friend, and a few other friends are all Jennifer - I once thought my name was Jennifer for a second because all of the girls I was with (there were three of them) were named Jennifer!  I don't want to do that to a kid...

  • I also love the name Luciana (nickname lucy).  We're naming our girl Liliana w/nickname Lily.  I dont think its quite as common - and there's some flexibility with nicknames (either Lily or Ana).  I say go for it if you still love the name.

I personally don't think Lily is the new Jennifer. Have you checked out the name data in your area in particular? I know one Lily that was born in October but no others. Whenever we mention our name people always say they have an aunt or grandma named Lillian.

  • We had Liliana on our list. I love the name. A friend of mine named her daughter Liliana and another named her daughter Lillian. I think all variations are becoming more popular. BUT if you like Lily, the name her Lily! Don't worry about everyone else. What's important is that you and DH like the name.

I agree with this. The only girl name DH and I agree on is Olivia and we LOVE it. It is at the top of the most popular list, but we don't know anyone named this, so we are sticking with it....if we have a girl. =)

  • As a Sarah born in the 80s, let me just say: having a popular name didn't ruin me. Having to be Sarah S. in my elementary classes wasn't so bad. I like my name, I like what it means, and I like that it's mine. If you love the name Lily, you should use it, regardless of popularity. It's a lovely name, it's easy to spell, and lilies are beautiful.

  • Lucy has always been one of my fave girl names. Alas... we cannot use it already having a Linus. :P I'm not THAT mean.
