Preemies

New to the preemies

Hi Iam coming over from the feb 2012 chat. I had Nolan at 28 weeks,on Dec 7,2011 he is in the NICU. He weighed 3lbs 11 oz and was 16 inches. He lost a little weight on day 2 but is up today by 1 oz .  He is doing good. He is taking 4 things of breast milk at each feeding and breathing on his own with the cpap reminding him to breath. He has sugar level problems because of the insulin I was on while pg, but they are getting better.  It is scary leaving him there everyday but I need recover from my c-section and cant be up there 24/hours. I want to be. I feel bad for leaving.  I got to hold him on Friday and it was great. They havent let us hold him again yet though. I hope they will start letting us hold him and touch him its werid not beable to touch him when he is in front of us and all we can do is look at him.

Re: New to the preemies

  • Hi! Welcome! Our babies have the same BW :):) which is HUGE for a 28 weeker, no? That's great! I know it's a really scary time right now. A bunch of us who've been around a while put together a blog - the link is in my siggy. Check it out - read some birth stories, visit some blogs. You'll probably find we have a lot in common.

That link doesn't work - probably a FB thing. Do you know how to post pictures here? Upload at tinypic.com and get the code for e-mail or whatever that size is then stick it in the html link.

  • Congrats and welcome! Have you asked the nurses about holding him?  They may limit it to once or twice per day, but being with mom is one of the best things for him right now. Try kangaroo care as soon as they will allow.

  • Yes, Ask the nurses, ask ever nurse... my 31 weekers are 2.8 and 3.14 and we have been holding them since day 1.. if he is otherwise healthy they should let you! The kangaroo is amazing, it is so emotionally healing for me and the boys love it too! Congrats and hang in there!

  • congrats and welcome - my DD was a 22 weeker so I didnt get to hold her for a long time, i feel your pain.  But ask, and like PP said ask every nurse, they are all different and some will be more inclined to let you kanagroo then others. I hope you have a short and uneventful NICU stay.

  • Hi, welcome. Nolan is a cutie!

Do they let you hold his hand? Maybe you could ask to do that if they won't let you hold him?

Keep us posted on his progress and ask any questions that come up.

  • Welcome and congrats on your BIG guy! His size will definitely help with things like staying warm outside of the isolette. I think that having to ask to hold YOUR baby is one of the hardest parts of being a NICU mom. My suggestions are the same as others, be persistent because it is really important for you AND baby. Sometimes the nurses forget to offer. It also sounds like your guy should be stable enough. Also see if you can help with cares- change his diapers, check his temp, help with bathing. It really helps you bond and feel like a mom!

  • They let us hold him tonight for a long time. While I was holding him it was time for him it eat though the tube so she put the milk in it and let me cont. to hold him and the tube that was the best.  Daddy got to hold him for awhile too tonight. I am going to start asking to hold him more.
