Not finding out your baby's gender?

Is anyone else toying with the idea of not finding out their baby's gender? I feel like it's one of life's epic surprises - if I can stand the wait! And it's totally early for me to be thinking about this but, these are the things I think about when trying not to worry.

Re: Not finding out your baby's gender?

  • DH and I will definetly not be finding out the sex of the baby. We kind of feel like its one of life's last "true" surprises! I'm hoping I don't break down either!

  • We did not find out with our first and do not plan to this time around either.  It was a fun surprise!  Since I knew going in I was not going to find out, I didn't spend much time wondering throughout the pregnancy.

  • I'm going back and forth with it. I knew about Lucas, and it was so much fun calling him by name and planning the nursery, but I think I would love that HUGE surprise at the end this time. Especially if I end up needing another c/s, at least there will be some element of surprise to the birth.

  • We thought about it for about two minutes. We both decided that it would be too difficult. Our first is a boy, and since we have everything we need for a baby, if it were a girl, the only thing we'd need is clothes. But...we're not patient enough. We'll have to be prepared. :)

  • We decided when we started trying that we weren't going to find out. My MIL is going to go insane before its all over though. She loves to shop. She wants us to let her find out 2 months early but she can't keep her mouth shut for anything.
  • We were Team Green with DS and will be with this one also, although that big surprise at the end wasn't as exciting for me, as I was just happy to be done w/ all the pain! Still fun though for DH :)

  • I would love to wait, but I'm not so sure DH will go for that plan.

  • DD was team green, but DS1 and 2 we had to know! It wasn't until the u/s that we decided to find out both times, so this time we decided to be honest with ourselves and admit we can't wait. Smile

  • I'm with you girl. I have never wanted to find out. There are very few (if any) genuine surprises left in life with the advances in technology, so we have never even thought of finding out. It's our choice and we don't look down on anyone either way, but for us, it's the right decision.

  • DH and I are not finding out the gender until delivery day :) but that's mostly because I don't plan on getting any ultrasounds unless something bad happens and they actually need to.

  • We will be finding out. I am way too much of a planner not to find out! DH and I both know we can't wait til delivery to find out!

  • I find everyone's reasons so interesting! It's such a personal thing. I'm sure my MIL will go bananas not knowing, but DH and I are both cool with not finding out, and I figure, that's what's most important :P I also don't want to get stuck with a lot of pink and blue stuff that will just irk me anyway! This baby is rockin' out to monsters, dinosaurs, and robots when I can manage it.

  • We are going team green this go around, last time we found out because DH wanted to, this time we are waiting until delivery to find out, because that's what I want. We'll get to do it both ways.

  • We are split on this- I don't want to know, but he does...

So, we talked about it last night and we agreed that he could find out as long as he doesn't tell anyone.. And I completely trust him not to tell- he's a VERY private person, so I'm ok with that..

I let DH make the call both times.  He thinks that it is a surprise no matter when you find out, so I'm sure we will know this time around as well.

I agree with this. We are finding out.

  • We are finding out, I do not have the patience to wait.  Besides the way I see it, it is a surprise either way.

  • My husband used to be firmly against finding out the sex ahead of time.  We'll see if that changes.

While I see all the upsides of NOT finding out ahead of time {gender neutral nursery and baby items to be available for future siblings, and the actual 'surprise' in finding out in the delivery room, no chance of "mistakes"...}, I would like to make items (clothing etc.) that will be specific to the baby, and not knowing the sex would make certain ideas I have for maternity photos difficult.

We'll see if we can hold out, but I guess for now we are "team green."

  • It's a surprise at 20 weeks or 40 weeks. Our opinion is there is enough 'newness' and surprise on delivery day - I like to prepare myself and know the gender ahead of time. But I understand people's reasons for waiting.

This.  I would much rather share the surprise with DH at 20 weeks when I am not reeling from pain and stuck to a table with people running around everywhere.

Tip for those of you getting the surprise at 20 weeks - ask the ultrasound tech to write down the gender and put the paper in an envelope.  Set aside a special time to open it with DH at home (when you are not covered in goo and with at least one stranger as you are during the ultrasound).  We did this with DS and it was an incredible moment for us.
