Music during labor?

I just found a couple new iphone apps - "Spa Music Radio" and "Nature Music Radio". They are free. I'm really liking the first one in the Spa Music called Breath of Nature. I think I might use these during labor.

Are you planning on listening to music? If so, what?

Re: Music during labor?

  • I'm planning on listening to music that usually calms me down, so some stuff that's more like punk or ska, but this is just a personal preference.

  • Funny story: I planned to use music during labor. I asked dh if he got the ipod, and he said yes. Come time for me to use it, he gets it out and says, "do you have the headphones?" WHAT? How could he get the ipod and not the headphones!?!

Thankfully my SIL's boyfriend had some. However, after 2 minutes of listening to music I was done. All that for nothing. I brought the ipod for baby 2 as well, and just had no desire to listen to it then either.

No real point here, just felt like rambling.

  • I'm thinking about it but haven't decided what I would want to listen to yet. My friend suggested "Push It" by Salt n' Pepa.

  • I'm not sure what I'll want to listen to (relaxing? Energizing? Just stuff I like?) so I loaded my iPhone up with an eclectic mix and I'll figure out what I'm in the mood for then. Pandora stations are also an option.

  • If I ever make a playlist on my phone I will be listening to bands that calm me like the Civil Wars and a few other groups and perhaps some soothing holiday tunes. I may also throw in some pump up songs for the pushing i.e. Kanye, DJ Kahlid, and a few others that boost my mood at the gym!

  • I plan on getting an epi like last time, and I didn't bring any music last time. Part of the problem is that I don't own an MP3 player or Ipod.  But I had them start my epi about the time that I'd REALLY REALLY need some calming down.  I'm hoping it will go the same way this time.  With the epi I was fine just chatting with the family that was there visiting with me and we watched a movie on Demand as I patiently waited for my body to do it's thing.

Just watch- since I had such a 'pleasant' experience last time nothing will go right this time and I'll wish I'd better prepared!  Isn't that karma or something? Lol.

  • DH is making me a playlist.  I'm also downloading the 30 day free trial for Spotify for my phone, so that I can listen to anything I want.

  • I have a playlist.  I'm a gamer, so a lot of it is background music from some of my favorite video games.  I'm also a band dork, so a good amount of orchestral music found its way there.  I'll bring headphones, but I may be happier just letting the iPod play without them.  Hopefully the battery will hold up because I don't have the wall charger for it.

  • I already have a relaxing playlist that I listen to when staying the night away from home to help me sleep.  I think I may just add a few things to it.  My list includes lots of Enya, Celtic Women, classical music, the soundtrack from Pride & Predjudice (the Kiera Knightly version) and the like.  I think I might add some of my favorite praise and worship songs for inspiration and meditation.

  • I am more into silence than anything else but I LOVE Ludovico Einaudi. His music always makes me feel relaxed. It's beautiful.

  • I made a mix-CD of Christmas music when I was pregnant with DS (he was born 12/22) and honestly, it worked SO well to relax me. I think I would listen to Christmas music in the middle of the summer if I was due then just because I find it relaxing.

If I am in labor this time (hoping for a VBAC but have to go into labor before my scheduled RCS), I will be listening to Christmas music again. Being able to focus on the words and sing along in my head helped me tune out of the pain, so I think that somethings with lyrics is a definite necessity for me.

  • I'm a music major, and just finished studying the Baroque, Romantic, Classical and 20th century eras of music...We had exams throughout the semester where we listened to random 20second clips and had to know the title of the piece and composer, so I figure I'll bring in some Romantic and Classical (since its my favorite) and play the guessing game again.  Hoping it'll keep my mind preoccupied and relaxed at the same time.
  • I'll be bringing my phone to listen to music during the early stages, I think, but I don't know if I'll use it during the pushing stages. I think I'll want to be talking and listening to DH encourage me. Could be wrong :)

  • For LO #1 I brought my iPod docking station and had 3 soothing CDs loaded on it.  We turned it on but I honestly don't really remember hearing the music, my mind was in other places.  I may bring just the iPod this time with ear buds but I doubt we'll use them.

  • Hopefully we will remember to grab my ipod and docking station so I can listen to either my hypnobirthing music or random playlists (half marathon mix, anyone? ;)).

I have a feeling DH will start twitching after listening to all the country music I have on my ipod, but Id much rather have LO listening to Kenny Chesney than Jay-Z/Rage Againt the Machine!
