Holiday baby plans?

Someone asked me today if we were preparring to get holiday gifts for the baby for Christmas- to which I replied "no, we're due the first week in January": but they insisted we should pick something up in case baby comes early so that it gets something for it's very first Christmas, in case it's born early, so we have something to remember the holidays by.

My thought is still "No."- we're not planning for a Dec baby, and frankly I have enough to plan in the short couple weeks left to go spending money shopping for someone who will likely not be around yet!  Besides- if we have the baby early enough for Christmas, I think baby itself is something to remember the holidays by!

But it makes me curious so I thought I would post the question: is anyone else preparring holiday stuff for baby in case it comes a little earlier than expected?

Re: Holiday baby plans?

  • Nope.  If we have a Christmas baby, his gifts are everything we've gotten for him already to prepare for his arrival.  A newborn isn't going to understand Christmas or lament that there isn't any "under the tree" gift for them.  I may special order an ornament if he comes early, but otherwise there's no point.

  • If he is home before Christmas I will get a few things for under the tree.  The only reason I would though is because my niece and nephew will have Santa gifts here, an will not understand why Santa wouldn't leave presents for my lo.

I won't go buy stuff now, if he happens to come early I will just sent mom or brother out to get some stuff.

Sorry for typos. On my phone!

  • No, if he comes early I'm sure we'll have our hands full and we won't be worried about a gift for him

  • Agreed, I don't plan on buying anything in particular for xmas for LO. Her nursery is fully stocked and I think that is the greatest gift all our friends and family could give her.

  • I really just needed a few toys for baby when he gets a bit older.  I have 2 older children who would wonder why the baby didn't get anything from Santa if he were to come early.  So I bought a fews things and wrapped them up and if he comes after Christmas then I have the toys when I need them and if he comes before then I am prepared.

  • i feel the exact same way as you and I wouldnt buy something when we've already spent thousands of dollars.  If she comes early, we can put one of the fifty brand new things we have in a box and open it and pretend it's a gift we just bought.
  • I'm not due until late Jan and we had both decided that we weren't going to get anything for LO for Christmas.  Well....we both bought something for her without telling each other thinking it would be a cool surprise.  I'm not sure what Hubby got but I bought two outfits that are for LO from her "brothers" (our dogs).  I also bought a couple of pacis, a paci clip and a paci bag as stocking stuffers because we did agree on having a little stocking for her.

We didn't get gifts in case she comes early, I think we're both just so excited that she's almost here and we wanted to share our excitement with each other by surprising each other with a gift for LO.

  • Since it's very possible our LO will be here before XMAS, DH got him some small presents and I got some small stuff (I bought a Star Wars leggo set because DH was oogling one and put on the car "to daddy and ethan, love mommy).  We also have a stocking with his name on it hanging up.

If he does come before XMAS, I plan on dressing him in a white onesie with matching white hat and red pants we have, and putting him half-way inside his stocking and taking a picture, then using that picture as his birth announcement/late holiday card (since we don't do cards but people will want to know he's here).

I think it's fun... yes we've spent thousands on him already, but he's our first and we have fun shopping for him lol.  So why not indulge for the holidays a little bit and spoil him while he's too little to take it for granted.  (obviously we'll stop and teach him to value things before he realizes he was spoiled lol).

  • We aren't due until late January so chances are pretty slim she'll show up before Christmas. We aren't getting her anything but my ILs bought stuff for her and put up a stocking. None of this is in preparation for her to come early, they just wanted to have stuff for her anyway (they tend to go a little nuts with the Christmas gifts).

  • There is a very great chance that my lo will be here before Christmas and we are not buying anything more than what we already have. The only thing that I would want is a cute outfit for some first Christmas pictures - but I don't even want to buy that without knowing the sex.

That being said my parents and grandparents have all gone nuts buying either Christmas or Birthday presents.

  • We are due on January 1st, and have been asked the same question multiple times!

No we are not planning on getting him any gifts for the holidays since he isn't expected till the 1st. If he comes early then he comes early and Im sure we would be able to find something last minute if needed, but having him early would make the holidays most memorable rather than him getting a gift he cant hardly play with, we would like to see him be able to atleast mess with the wrapping paper and then try to figure out the toy when he is almost a year old.

  • No.  In fact, my MIL and SIL asked what they should get baby for Christmas, and I said, "Well, nothing since she'll still be in utero."  They thought I was crazy and said they wanted to get her presents for Christmas for me to open.  I was confused, but I told them things that were needed anyway.  I said absolutely no toys or anything "Baby's 1st Christmas" since it's not.  I think they think I'm just mean, but I want to focus on DD this year.  Whatever!

  • We're not doing gifts for baby. I agree that all we've bought so far to prepare for him/her will be the gifts if there is an early arrival. DS picked out a stuffed animal for LO and we ordered him a toy to be from baby regardless of when he/she is born. I guess that can pass as a Christmas present if he/she is born early. I'm not too concerned.

DS was 6 weeks old at his first Christmas and we didn't do anything major either. Maybe a few little toys or books, but we considered his gifts to be the stuff we had  bought to prepare for him back then, too.

  • Nope. If my baby came before Christmas (which would mean 1 month early) I wouldn't worry about having an extra present. She would truly be my Christmas present!!

  • As DH said the other night when this came up -

"You'll be giving him milk and I'll be wiping his bum. What else could he want?"

  • I am due Jan 11th, but even with the possibilty of having LO early I still am not going to get any Christmas gifts for LO. I figure I can always pick up some baby's first Christmas stuff after Christmas and if not no big deal.
