Baby Safety Locks

Can anyone recommend good baby safety gear? We discovered this past weekend that it's time to baby proof! Smile I had bought some stuff, but DH didn't like it and didn't want to drill holes into our cabinets. Anyone have any other recommendations that don't involve drilling that worked well for you?

Re: Baby Safety Locks

  • If you don't like the hidden latches (that have to be drilled) and have handles on your cupboards, there are a couple different styles that slip through the handles on the outside to keep them locked. I'm not a fan of them bc it seemed like I was constantly catching my leg on them (they stuck out a bit), but luckily the previous owners of our new house had a toddler and had already installed the latches on the inside of all the cabinets... Made that decision easy for us. :)

Past that, our child-proofing has consisted of outlet plugs in any open outlet, doorknob covers on certain doors, and a few of the foam corner covers. Our dishwasher and oven both have built-in locks so we didn't need any for those. We are planning to buy a few furniture anchors bc DS is really getting into climbing, and we do have a few things (mostly bookshelves) that could tip. We also have baby gates installed.

  • I picked this up at Sam's Club what seems like a million years ago- it was on clearance and like $8 I think.

The only thing we use are the plug covers and one of these

on the cabinet below the kitchen sink, which is where we keep all of the cleaning supplies.

DD couldn't open our doors until after she was 2. We have a gate at the top of our steps, too.

As a friend of mine pointed out, you only need to baby proof for your baby- a lot of it is teaching them what is OK and what is not. You can't cover every sharp corner in the world.

We have these locks on the cabinet under the sink and the cabinet over the fridge. We also have covers on the stove knobs. That was all for the cats (yes, they got into all of the above including turning on the gas stove and singing themselves (just 1 did that)).

Anyway, I think we'll get a couple more of those and maybe foam corners for the coffee tables we have.

I think the major thing for us will be putting stuff out of his reach. At the moment he's not yet mastered crawling, but he could do it any day now, and we'll have to put a lot of stuff away when he does.

I am in the Annapolis area - but the ones you have, are they non-drills?
