Planning a trip

This will be our fist trip with Ian. 6 hours in air (with one layover) and 3 hours at an airport. On the packing list there are about 6-8 items for me and DH and there are 32 items for the LO! Sure most of them are small, but still...Babies are sooo demanding. How do people with twins, triplets,..manage I have no idea!

Re: Planning a trip

  • OMG, are you packing for an an expedition!? Pack light, my friend, or you'll be overwhelmed. You'll find your groove quickly, and the trip will fly by fast. You can absolutely do this, I've flown with all my dks before, gear and all, and no dh. S is a total wiggler and hates sitting still, but she behaved and even slept on our flights (4 hours).

If it helps, I usually bring our car seats and check them with the baggage, gate check the stroller, and we don't have a lot of other stuff besides. My backpack has wheels so I can pull it, and the diaper bag (Ju Ju Be) has the stroller clips, so I clipped it to the backpack. I travel with a tiny purse that folds flat and small. And the times we've taken a play pen, it's only been our Phil and Ted's; it packs up very tiny and only weighs 5 lbs. Or there's been one reserved at our destination.

ETA: I love the updated siggy pic, oh, what a cutie!

  • Gate check both the stroller for sure.. and the carseat if you can. Will save you a ton of hassle later.

And get a big strong duffel bag or equivalent to put them in. I got a huge black canvas bag to hold both of them at my local Army/Navy surplus store for about $25. Way cheaper than the bags you can find specifically for air flights. Baggage handlers will still beat the crap out of your stuff with those conveyor belts,

Take only enough baby supplies (diapers, etc) for what you need for the day/night.  Buy stuff at a local drug store when you get to your destination.

  • Thanks for the tips. Hopefully we can gate check the car seat and the stroller. They are not compatible, but it shouldn't be a problem I think. The stroller is tiny-ish. It is one of those umbrella strollers and we will definitely need it to get around the airports. DS does not like the Ergo much.

The 30 something items on the list are things like clothes  for  3 days, bottles, food for 2 days, diapers for 2 days, some small toys for on the plane, his vitamins, the diaper bag stuff, ....We were not planning on taking the pack'n play with us. DS's father has hunted one for us for when we get there. My biggest concern is the 4 hour flight. Can we keep DS entertained for such a long time. His daily naps are usually short (45 min or less). But who knows, maybe he will decide to sleep more. Hoping for it! And another concern is the diaper change on the plane. I will not do it unless it is absolutely necessary. But I have heard that not all the planes have a changing table in those tiny bathrooms. So probably DH will have to get up and I change DS on the "extra seat".

It is  nice to hear that the whole travelling with infants is not all that bad. Gimmietimmies, I admire you and you are my idol at the moment! Going on a trip alone with 5 kiddos? WOW!

  • Harlow always sleeps longer in my arms, so maybe your LO will do the same. And look how big he is, sitting up by himself. Too cute!

  • Everything everybody else said.
  • Everything everyone else said, and: enjoy the time with your little one! How often do you get to just BE with your kid(s) without having to run around and try to get other things done? I flew to Australia a couple of months ago (hubby came later) and it was great to spend so much time with Lo Lo. Sure, we were tired, but we got to snuggle for 15hours together on the plane.

  • I took a similar trip with my LO at about the same age.  She pretty much slept the whole time, but she has always been a good sleeper.  I think the motion and the noise of the plane help a lot.

As for diaper changes....I did absoluetly have to change her (she had a blow out) on an airplane with no change table.  I just put her changing pad down on the floor in the bathroom (I used a disposable pad on the floor so my changing pad didn't get all yucky!!) and changed her there.  It really wasn't that bad.  But if it is only a pee diaper I would wait until you are in an airport (maybe put some diaper cream on before hand to keep LO's skin for getting irritated)

    Good Luck!

Thanks for reminding me to get some disposable changing pads. Yeah, bathroom floor never occurred to me because I thought there is not enough room. But if you did it, then it must be manageable for me too.
