book exchange at preschool, am I an a$$hole if I...

re-gift a couple of books the boys have never touched or opened?  I have plans to head to Hastings after naps and check out their bargain books because the note from the school asks that the book not cost more than $5.  UM?!  HELLO!?  How does one find a book (that is appropriate for 2-year-olds and NOT a board book) for under $5??

So, am I a complete jerk for even considering using 2 of our own books?

    No way, I don't think you're a jerk - I'd totally do the same thing!  Of course, that might make me a jerk too, but at least I'd be in good company!

    If it hasn't been touched and it's still new, I say go for it! We spend enough money at the holiday's... why not give something you know you won't use. No one (except us of course) would know the difference.

    Untouched and unopened is fine by me.  We are heading to Target tonight to get our books.  I don't even know what our $ limit is. I figure as long as I remember to bring them, I'm doing good.

    I guess it could be, but I don't want to be giving a seemingly "babyish" book to a 2/3 year old.

    Oh.  I still buy board books for my 2.5 year old.  He still occasionally rips paper pages.

    Don't get me wrong, my kids rip up pages all the time (especially when they're library books, it's like they *know*), but I find that my kids really like to listen to a story rather than a short little rhyme or something that most board books are, KWIM?  I don't know if their little friends are the same way but I'm skewing older rather than younger, just in case.  My boys are the 8th/9th youngest (out of 10 kids) in their class.

    At last year's book exchange we got a book we already had.  It hasn't been touched so it went back into the exchange loop this year.  I didn't even give it a second thought.

    i actually thought to myself yesterday 'crap, we dont have any books in decent enough condition to re-gift'.  haha

    seriously i only buy pre-owned (haha) books at goodwill/garage sales for my kids and i'm guessing that isn't what the teachers had in mind.  i guess we'll be hitting the bargain bin at b&n today.  sigh!
