Help with a girl name....made up??

I like Evangeline. I want to use Lynn/lyn/linn for my mother in our daughter's name somewhere.

Is Evangelyn too made up sounding?

Would Evangeline Lynn be too much with the line/lynn sounds together?

ETA: In my head I am pronouncing Evangeline as Evange LEAN as everyone is telling me is the normal. I thought it was like a straight LINE, but I have been corrected enough that I will go with the normal LEAN sound.

  • I feel like the "lin" in Evangeline is already honoring your mother without butchering a very pretty name.

  • I think the -lyn ending looks really terrible. I'd stick with Evangeline and use Lynn as a mn.

I would agree...you'll understand the importance, as will your family, so there's no reason to have to use "lynn."

I didn't know if I was over thinking it, or if it wasn't good. I agree, Evangeline is way better. I just wanted to see what anyone else thought.

  • I've only ever hear Evangeline pronounced Evangel-lean. Not "line". I don't know what's correct, but I think most people would pronouce it with "lean" at the end.

I wouldn't do Evangelyn. I think it looks a bit silly. Know your back story, I would name her Evangeline Lynn or Evangeline Linda to honor your mom, even though it's not the best "flow" in the world. I think honoring her is more important than the name flow.

  • I pronounce it as Ev-an-gel-een ok less choppy but with a leen and not -line or lyn sound. I really don't like the butchered spelling, it changes the whole name. Although Avangeline Lynn isn't great flow it's not terrible and it is very important to you to get your mom's name in, I would do it.

  • I pronounce the line in Evangeline- LEEN, not like a straight line on a paper.

Evangelyn does sound made-up to me and the mn Lynn doesn't really flow.

I completely agree with what you said. Thanks. Plus I think the mn, while important, isn't as important as the fn. I won't be calling her Evangeline Lynn when I say her name, she will be Evangeline.

I will add it to my list but I'm sure knowing H, he will veto it.

I agree with everything Hannah said.  Evangeline is Evangel-leen to me.  I think Evangeline Lynn is a great way to honor your mom and that's what I would go with!

  • Maybe its just where I grew up, I pronounce Evangeline as -lin, not -line or -lean unless someone corrects me. There is a racetrack near my home town called Evangeline Downs, and everyone pronounces it -lin. Its not far fetched at all.

I agree. And if you still wanted to use Lynn as the middle name I say go for it. It may not have the perfect flow but since you're honoring your mother I don't think it matters. Evangeline is beautiful!

  • How about Evangeline Lynae. I like that. Still honoring mom, but it doesn't sound cut-off with Lynn

    Lynae l(y)-

nae as a girl's name is a variant of Linnea (Scandinavian) and Lynn (English), and the meaning of Lynae is "lime or linden tree".

  • evangeline is lovely but with lynn it's a tongue twister. evangelyn looks like another trendy spellkng.

  • Rent the movie "The Princess and the Frog" - there's a whole song about Evangeline. And to contradict a pp, that movie is set in New Orleans and they also pronounce it -leen.

My only comment is that there's an actress named Evangeline Lilly. She was on the LOST series so I think many people will recognize it. I think it kills the ability to use Lynn as a middle name unless you want to draw that connection.

So you trust a Disney movie over 2 native Louisianans that tell you different? Nice. Evangeline Downs, Evangeline Parish, Evangeline Oaks.. all pronounced as -lin, not -line or -lean.
