I have STD and will be having our second child in July. I will get 66% of my salary. Anything I should be aware of?
I've seen some other posts below. Do they take taxes out? I assume they do as that would probably be too good to be true! Do I just pay my employer the money they normally take out of my check for insurance?
Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Re: How does STD work?
it'll depend on your company/policy. At mine they do take taxes out but it's far less than out of my normal check.
I do not have to pay for my normal payroll deductions while on leave, they just 'spread out' the costs from while I'm gone over the rest of the year when I get back. But some companies do require you do pay your insurance, etc while out on leave.
Also find out how long the 'waiting period' is before it kicks in...ie mine is 2 weeks where I have to use sick time first.
Mine works pretty much the same as MadHatter - but you really need to make sure that if they pay for your deductions when you are gone that you can repay that back over a course of time. I had to leave out last year and they didnt explain that to me - so when I thought I was getting a check I didnt get a check until a month after I got back!!!! Talk about being pissed.
With my STD - it kicks in 7 days after - but I have the option of using my all my Paid Time Off / Vacation days - then having it kick in after that. Or having it kick in even if I still have PTO days left.
Oh and my company only pays out 60% of my salary - and no they dont take taxes out.
I got 6 weeks STD at 60%, but it was really 5 weeks, since STD didn't kick in until I had been out for one week. My company paid me for that initial week with 5 days of full pay (sick days) . I had the option to have taxes taken out of my STD or not. I chose not to, and will have to pay them come tax time. I paid the company for my health insurance premiums out of the check I got with vacation pay, but they would have allowed me to pay them in installments when I returned.
My only advice is to make sure you are clear on everything up front. My HR gave me incorrect info, and after I had the baby, I was scrambling to figure out how much money we would have.
It totally depends on how the plan is set up and who pays for your STD.
Mine is set up so that I pay for STD with after-tax dollars. That means that the benefit is not taxable. I get 66 2/3% of my salary for up to 12weeks after a 7 day waiting period.
The benefit was paid by the insurance company. My medical insurance had to be paid seperately so I needed to send a check in every month. Because the disability time is pretty standard (6 weeks), I received one lump-sum payment at the beginning of my leave.
