if you have your own blog domain

Where are you hosting your blog?  Do you pay for hosting it there?  Likes?  Dislikes?  What do you *wish* you could do that you can't?

I'm probably getting a domain name for Christmas (because I'm a nerd) and I'm just trying to guesstimate all my costs now.

Re: if you have your own blog domain

  • Arvixe hosts our biz site and our personal website. (I think you can have up to 6 or 7 domains on them). I don't remember what we paid them (it was a multi year deal last year) but it was super super cheap.

  • I don't get a lot of traffic (because I don't really post on it anymore and not many people know about it) but I just kept it hosted on WordPress and got the domain name from godaddy.com

  • when i first got my own domain name, i just paid the yearly fee (<$10) and kept my hosting on wordpress.

for the foodie blog, i now host with bluehost. i think i pay around $60-$70/year. I like bluehost. been using them for about 3 years now.

  • i kept my blog hosted through blogspot and bought a domain name through google. it was $10 for the year.

but i sounds like you may be wanting to do something fancier. i'm no help there.

  • oh and when i first bought my domain i got it through godaddy.com using a coupon so it was ~$2.
  • Keep in mind that having your own domain name and having hosting is not the same thing. You can buy a domain name and point it to any blog, but as soon as you're at the blog the URL will either be masked with https://www.yourdomainname.com (no sub-pages) OR if you don't have masking on (at the domain name host), when the visitor lands at your site, the URL will then turn back to your blogger or wherever URL.

I have all of my domain names AND hosting through GoDaddy. They have wordpress integration, so I have my blog installed on my hosting and do everything through my own site admin - (wordpress.org which is software) vs. Wordpress.com where THEY (being wordpress) host your blog for you. Make sense?

I've been with GoDaddy for years and like them enough. I've had years where I look into moving all of our sites, but that would be a huge undertaking and not worth my time. Their prices are just so cheap too - I always search for discount codes when renewing and save a bundle. I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff, but get stuck a lot. Their  customer service is pretty awesome.

    HTH!

  • i got my domain name more than 10 years ago at godaddy.com. i paid for 10 years at $6/year or something like that.

my hosting is done at ipower.net. ugh. i hate it. server goes down all the time and there's very little support when my blog breaks. but i somehow set up automatic renewal for every 2 years and i forget to look at transferring to a new host when my renewal period is up.
