C-sections

New to the board with a question

Hi ladies,

At my last appointment my doctor told me my little guy was breech. I'm only 28 weeks so I know there is plenty of time for him to turn but the planner in me wants to be prepared for all scenarios. I feel like there is a lot of biased opinions and misinformation out there about c-sections. What were your experiences like? Any advice you can give me?

  • Totally not being snarky, but my advice would be to not worry about it yet.  I'm a planner too, but worrying about something that is so far off and has a good chance of not happening doesn't help either.  I swear with both pregnancies I would be worried about one thing and then something totally unrelated would happen.

  • Mine went smoothly as well.  I was able to have skin to skin contact a few minutes after she was out. It was awesome. All I could think and say was that she is so beautiful!  After skin to skin contact they took DD to be cleaned and finished with me.  Within an hour I was able to breastfeed.  I had her at 2:30 in afternoon and they had me up and moving at 8 that night.

  • I've had 2, the first unplanned I was 18 yrs old and scared to death, they both went very well, it is not bad at all.....

I personally think your smart to ask, don't worry about it but do make sure your open for either option and it will eliminate the stress later, if you do have to have the c-section. I wasn't prepared at all, after it was done I realized it was nothing to worry about.

The recovery went smoothly for both of my c-sections. But for either way you deliver I encourage you to let people help, don't try to do it all yourself, sit back, relax and let yourself heal.... Enjoy this special time! GL

  • My LO was breech since around 28 weeks as well and she never turned.  I have a bicornuate uterus so she couldn't turn.  I think its good to start thinking about how you are going to deliver, even if it doesn't end up being a c/s.

My c/s was pretty smooth.  I was scheduled but went into labor the night before.  The surgery itself was about an hour.  Afterwards I was wheeled into recovery and my husband was there and they gave me the baby right away.  I was able to try nursing then as well.  I stayed in recovery for 2 hours then went to my room.  I stayed 4 nights (I could have left earlier but was having trouble with BFing so I stayed an extra day to work with the LC)  I was up and walking about 5 hours after surgery and showered that night.

The c/s still is surgery and for the first few days, I was sore and couldn't move as well as I would have liked.  But I was still able to care for my child and myself without help.  When I got home, I was fine with caring for the baby and didn't need anyone to stay with me (I was very concerned about this before the c/s - I didn't know what to expect)  I felt completely back to normal after 2 weeks but really was feeling pretty good after a week.  I needed no pain medications after the surgery except for Motrin, which I took for a week after surgery.

Not sure what other biased opinions/misinformation you are referring to but I hope that clears some of it up for you.   I hope your LO turns, but if not, at least you are prepared!

  • I'm glad you asked this too as I'm in the same boat - LO has been breech since 28w and now that I'm 36w, we actually got the c-section scheduled just in case he doesn't flip or I don't go into labor beforehand.  I've been trying to read up on c-sections as much as possible too; I find the more I know, the better prepared and therefore the more relaxed and hopefully a better overall experience.  Of course, once we accept that we're having a c-section, they kid'll flip and it will all be for naught....Surprise

    Good luck with everything!

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Lucas flipped two more times from 28w to 38w when he was delivered.

This time wasn't bad at all. I went in, hooked up in triage until it was time, walked to the OR, sliced open, cried, he cried, held him while we were wheeled back to our room, recovered and nursed right away.
