NBR: How long are dried spices good?

This is probably a google question, but I'd rather ask ya'll. :-)  We received a spice rack with 20 different spices for our wedding 5 years ago. Many of which I have never used (nor heard of for that matter). Are these spices still good after 5 years (and unopened) or should I toss them?

  • They are still good but aren't as potent after 1 year. You'd probably have to use 2 or 3x as much as the recipe calls for so it would taste the same. I'd probably toss them and refill the containers with ones that you actually use.

  • Ditto JayandJack. And if they don't smell like much of anything they're not gonna taste like much of anything either.

That was my thought, except this year I almost poisoned everyone with moldy sage. It was probably a year old and had mold in it! So now I check first. An if there is no scent, then it's not worth using, IMO.
