January 2011 Moms

What do you think of this?

Tonight I ran to the local grocery store to pick up some groceries. There are 5-6 handicap parking spots up front and 2 new or expecting mom ones next to those. There were 2 empty handicap spots, but someone with a handicap sticker was parked in one of the new/expecting mom spots. As I was going in I saw a man with a walker get in the car. So obviously handicapped, but definitely not a new or expecting mother. I know that those handicapped spots were possibly full when he got to the store. I guess I'm wondering what you all think of this.

I'm torn I think he definitely deserved a close spot, but had a 39 week pregnant woman or mom with a newborn been there she deserves it too. Maybe he thought it was a handicapped spot too.

To clarify I'm not upset by any means by this. I just thought about it a lot, wondering if he was right to park there. Interesting ethical question I guess.

Re: What do you think of this?

  • I vote no. If a pg woman can't park in the handicapped than the handicapped can't park in the expecting/newborn spot. My grandmother has a handicapped sticker and many times all of the spots are taken and she parks in a regular spot. It happens.

Side note - when are you no longer a parent of a newborn (to qualify for that spot)?

I've wondered that too about the newborn thing. I guess I qualify it as when you no longer are hauling them into the store in their carrier. But I feel like I have more to organize and get in the store with two now, even without the carrier. I haven't parked in that spot since Em was about 2 months old.

  • Was he an older man? If so, maybe he thought he was in a handicap spot.

I've only used those Expectant/New Baby spots a handful of times. When I was whalishly huge and when the girls were newborns and I didn't want them to get cold (both winter babies).

I would have put him in his 50's. In my head I made lots of excuses for him. Because no it's not a huge deal. The spots are nice. I used them, but I never bought into the "I'm pregnant and handicap, debilitated" thing.

In general, I agree with MrsLynnyD though. If a mom can't park in the handicap spots for those reasons, then a handicapped person shouldn't be parking in her spot.

  • Of course he should park there. He's using a walker. On no planet does being uncomfortable trump a legit disability. New mom spots always felt like horseshit pandering to me anyway.

I agree with the bolded. Those spots are merely a suggestion and not lawful at all. Technically anyone who wants to can park there without penalty (not saying that it's ok, just that they can).

That being said, I love those spots. We have them on base at the PX and they are actually enforced there. They sure have helped when I had to pee real bad and didn't have time to drive circles around the parking lot. They have a million spots reserved for the higher ups, so unless you're the Col., you're not parking in the front half of the parking lot.

    We've like, met, right? lol.

I found it way more convenient to park far away enough that I can swing the door wide without worrying about door dinging someone else.

  • If I was pregnant or toting W, Id still rather have the handicap person take it.

  • If the dude is using a walker I have no problem with him taking the spot.  It's the a-holes who seem to be walking just fine and dandy and using someone else's tag for their own benefit who I can't stand.

I agree. But I also agree as an expectant mother I was willing to walk (if accompanied) from the back of the parking lot, because let's face it, minus a disability walking is good for you.

  • My granny has a disabled persons parking pass..and she says it allows her to park wherever the heck she wants..any red zone..any parking spot..she is also 80+ and an Italian spitfire who lived through WW2..I pity anyone who tries to tell her differently..lol...Big Smile So yeah, he can park there!!
